Illinois 86, Rutgers 63 Postgame

#178
Best defensive performance of the year in conference, according to points per possession (0.818), an entire point per possession less than average for Rutgers.

Updated efficiency margin:

Observations:
- Rutgers is done playing Illinois now, so their numbers should smooth out eventually.
- Illinois is done playing Rutgers now, so their numbers should smooth out eventually.
- Still clearly a 3-4 team league (with the 4th spotting the league 2 games), and right now I'm not sure there's a solid tournament resume among the rest. If nobody else finishes above .500 in conference, this could be a 4-bid league.
- Of the rest, I think Northwestern has the best chance to build a winning record, as their opening schedule has been brutal (with their next 3 games being Illinois, Ohio State, and Purdue), but the back half of their schedule should allow them to pile up wins and efficiency, and ending strong should help them in the eyes of the committee.
If Maryland had average offense they’d be tough. But man, the rest of the league outside the top 4 can’t guard anyone.

Kind of interesting, team's official twitter account made no mention of TSJ from what I saw, although I didn't look super hard. Curious to see how they proceed through the rest of the season.
I was keeping an eye on that during and after the game as well. No mentions at all, not featured, or even in the background, of any pictures they posted from what I could tell. Probably trying minimize social media hate as much as they can.

That, and from a university standpoint, it wasn't their choice to let him play,

In the team hotel that night after the loss a very agitated Brad stopped at our table on the way out of the restaurant to briefly speak with a well known member of the ILLINI entourage and quietly said, "that's it. No more. From now on, I am going to do things MY way".
Glad to hear it....but whose way was Brad following before?

Not an insider, but from what…I think @Indy Illini Fan? has said, Brad has taken control of Portal recruiting. Correct me if I’m wrong, Indy.

So maybe he was giving a little decentralized control to his assistants to help him have a team that could “stay old”.

That didn’t work out how we wanted last year so it could be he was saying he’s taking control of who we go after.

When recruiting older players, you MAY only get one year with them, so there can’t be attitude or personality issues. The fit has to be right. So instead of “best players possible” he may want “best fit possible” which is his way as opposed to how he allowed his assistants to recruit the portal (and maybe even high school?).

Isn’t great when the wife buys in? My wife came up with the idea of season football tickets instead of a fall cruise. “Would you like if…?” she said. If we were closer, we’d have season basketball.

Admittedly we are college sweethearts and had season Block I football tickets for our junior and senior year, but it’s being able to do something like to do together…and we’re in as long as health prevails. 🧡💙

Ty reminds me of that line in the movie Pursuit of Happyness - “What would you say if a guy walked in for an interview without a shirt on, and I hired him?”..."He must've had on a really nice pair of pants". Ty is an incredible pair of pants. No jump shot? No problem. He does everything else so dang well and is so valuable. Every Day Guy.

Honest question, where would you rank the 5 UI portal transfers (I included Shannon and Dain) all time anywhere? Was trying to think of 5 better and just couldn’t.

Might be the koolaid and newness of the portal, but I think coach has really done wonders in the portal world.
They have a great case. That said, I think we are seeing many more high-quality players transferring than ever before. Between the high number of 5th year guys, the lure of big program NIL, and the immediate eligibility rules, transferring is much more attractive than it has ever been.

I was so excited when TSJ had the breakaway dunk that I didn't care that he stood posing afterward, Quincy chest bumped him from behind, and Rutgers inbounding, running down the floor with a 5 on 3 advantage. I think that they got 2 free throws out of the play.

Different circumstances we would have all come unglued. Coach would have at least benched TJ, maybe both. Yesterday it was all good.

Coach cleared the bench at the end, and Rutgers couldn't cut into the lead.

It was a beautiful day.

I’m still energized by that game yesterday. Wow. This team is good but you add TSJ, the impact is immediate. He’s so strong and fast. When he slices through the opposing defense, you can see his strength and what we were missing. We are fortunate that we have soo many other weapons on this team and everyone buys into playing team defense (with only a few exceptions). TSJ is special and a difference maker.

To which I would add that Skyy Clark starting from the jump as a freshman under a one-sided ill advised NIL deal never would have occurred if you look at the way Brad has traditionally coached and his refusal to rely upon a freshman guard. When that was followed up with Jayden Epps AAU selfish playing style and his refusal to return to a game when Brad told him to do so, it felt like Brad had completely lost his way. I was shocked that he continued to play him after that. The offense never resembled his traditional concepts of a more team oriented fast paced passing game. Indy Illini Fan and other insiders would obviously know more, but my thought at the time is that Brad had hired some very good recruiting coaches and was trying to accommodate their representations during recruiting as to playing time but it simply didn't work and left the older players like Coleman incredibly frustrated. Chemistry matters and roles need to be defined and that never occurred. This is not a defense of Brad as he was ultimately responsible, but it never felt like he was on the same page as his staff and his players as to how the team played on the floor. In addition, he was clearly not having fun or enjoying what he was doing. My take that night was that Brad was saying to himself, "Enough". I wouldn't put up with this when I was coaching at Daytona Beach Community College and I certainly am not going to put up with it now that I am the head coach at Illinois." Since then, his fingerprints are all over everything having to do with the program and it obviously shows. What a remarkable change! Last year's team never remotely reflected his personality. This year's team absolutely does and his joy in coaching them is apparent every time he speaks. More importantly, the feeling when his players speak about him appears to be mutual. That chemistry can take this team a long way this season. Time will tell.
