Illinois 87, Quincy 52 (Exhibition) Postgame

Interesting that Sencire lead the team in +/- despite playing only 13 minutes.

And that the top 5 Illini in that stat were the inexperienced newcomers.

Sencire +24
Skyy +23
Dain +22
Jayden +21
Ty +19

RJ +16
TJ +13
MM +13
Connor + 11
Coleman +7

Not always the most meaningful stat (and a first/exhibition game with a sample size of one), but not what one would have guessed beforehand.
If:
1) Coleman plays as well all year as he did last night, and,
2) He nonetheless ranks tenth on the team in +/-, then,
3) The Illini will go undefeated for the season.

Seeing this comment a lot from folks, but this team has other guys who can shoot the ball, it just didn’t work last night. I’ll kiss Alfonso Plummer’s butt at half court if we wind up shooting 17% for the season.
If the bar is 17% from 3, gonna be a long season. Of course they won’t shoot that for the season. That doesn’t mean it is going to be anywhere close to a strength. Lot of room to improve on last night’s 3-pt shooting and still have it be a relative weakness.

The good news is we do have some players who potentially could be good or at least average from 3. And the diversity of this team’s offense as well as its D should give them room to overcome a poor distance shooting night. But there are games they are going to need it, and I think everyone would feel more comfortable knowing it will be there in those cases if Goode wasn’t glued to the bench with an injury.

From the highlight clip I watched last night , it looked like a bunch of new faces , playing in the SFC for only the second time (according to BU ) with so much ability wanting to do too much too soon at the start of the game ......As the game wore on the nerves adjusted and they started to play up to their abilities............

I know it was an exhibition game , but it's the first on court play , post Kofi (pun) and it seemed listening last night and seeing some highlights that the skill level is high for this years Illini.......The task at hand for the coaching staff is how to meld all the Illini components into a cohesive unit and mix and match the lineups until a pattern is established on who plays well with who and for how long........

It would have been so nice to see Luke's leadership and 3 pt skills last night , but it is what it is and we can look forward to his return like we would a mid season transfer addition.........

I like the full court press ideology of not just trying to get a steal but basically slowing down the opponents offense to a 15-18 second chance........it will be so interesting to see how the press impacts the overall team success , as I still remember the dunkfest's from BU first couple of years here........

A new season , a new team and a new viewing experience for the Illini Nation............I get my first viewing look @ EIU..............CAN'T WAIT !!!!!!

LET'S GO ILLINI !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Take it with a grain of salt because we're talking about practice, but in his press conference, BU said the team has been hitting 40-41% from 3 in practice. He also said it was their first time shooting at State Farm and chalked up the shooting woes to that. Certainly hope he's right and it's not just his usual hyperbole. Time will tell, but I'm hopeful.

Honestly glad to hear it since I do not want to kiss Alfonso Plummer’s butt.

I think there are more shooters on this team than folks seem to think, and I think we’ll be surprised with Shannon. And a good share of the volume lost from last season was of middling efficiency with Frazier and Williams shooting 240 threes between them at a sub-33% clip.

I think we’ll shoot fewer and make fewer, but when the dust settles I also think we’ll be a better offensive team than we were last year. I hope so, at least.

Best display we saw was the four frosh. The future. When Perrine and AH arrive, the core will be there for a FF run in a couple of years with Goode and RJ. Who knows what will happen next year? Would be nice if BU can find another instant offense guy like Plummer. He could get his 3 off anytime and we don't have that guy now.

Maybe he is called Epps.

I thought Dainja added a lot in the second half. He still stumbles around quite a bit and carries a spare tire, but his tips and screens were something strong to build on.

Now, about that free throw form, uncoiling like a snake and then... CLANK...might need a little work....

It’s meant really to disrupt the offense in getting into their offense also gives them a shortened shot clock when they get into their half court offenses.
I like it. It’s pretty soft and we really only trapped when the offense made it easy for us. Didn’t seem like we over extended ourselves.

I am also a big fan of the double deny of the pg on the inbound. Make somebody else handle 1 on 1 in the full court when it’s not their normal role. Then we switch everything in the half court. Teams are gonna end up in a rush to get a shot off.

Edit: but then if we really ever need to turn up the pressure, a lineup of Hawkins, Shannon, rj, Ty and Mayer. Sheesh.

Does any one know if Big Ten Network will air this game anytime soon? My wife and son went to the game, but unfortunately I was in Boston for work and BTN Plus wouldn't let me re-subscribe! Any info. helps!

If I do that, do you know if I can stream that game on demand?
First, and more of a rhetorical question, I wonder why you cannot re-subscribe. I have subscribed the last few years with the same credentials every time. But that is none of my business. Second, if I understand correctly by what you mean as "on demand" yes, you should be able to watch whenever you like. Two things though, one is that I find the Roku BTN plus channel interface to be poor to very poor. It took me quite some time to find the Quincy game. I just don't think the set up makes much sense but maybe it is just me. And second, I don't know how long they keep these games. At first, I think they are listed in the Replay or Recent Replay section (can't remember the exact name). But eventually since there are new games added to the Replay section the game you seek may be "shoved" off the list and after that I think it gets harder to find it/them. I had to do a search sometimes in the past and even then it wasn't easy.

Not even close to Kofi. Worst free throw form in my memory at Illinois. Hopefully, it can be improved. I would be happy with 50% from him but not expecting it.
Wow. After seeing those videos of him draining jumper after jumper (iirc, it was outside on a stiff/maybe double rim even), I'm surprised to hear this.

Best info I can find, in high school he was 69.2% on FT's. Would love to have this.

Hopefully, he was nervous, but it wasn’t just the misses, it was his form.

There has been talk that he has a “broken shot” right now and confidence is an issue. Maybe he will regain his high school form soon.
