Illinois 87, Valparaiso 64 Postgame

Curious as to how you came up with this assessment and “comp.”. Best I can tell he’s 0-1 from 3 and that came in an exhibition game. Is this based on his brother’s play?
Obviously havent really seen much of Nico yet but he looks smooth and from what I've heard around campus he's a very good shooter.

The comp is just because their brothers I assume they have somewhat similar games though that's not always true. Davide was a bit bigger but was one of the best shooters in college.

Free throw shooting is mostly mental. It’s why nba players who stay in the nba are mostly 80-90% for the good ones and even the bad are 65-75%. In college 80-85% means you’re really consistent
What really makes shooting free throws difficult in game situations is going from having your brain in a quick reaction mode to a calm focus mode with your heart rate north of 160. You can drill the mechanical stuff all day in practice but it’s almost impossible to simulate the rest of it.

Free throw shooting performance has marginally improved over the years but given how much higher the skill level in the game has gotten it’s stayed remarkably consistent for a long time. It’s just the nature of the task.

Goode is 6'7 with a high release. We've seen him get off quick shots due to time constraints before. He may not have the quickest, most accurate trigger. But I like the height of his release and motion alot.

Domask shoots it way out in front of his body. Very prone to getting blocked, like we saw from a pretty small guard last night.

I've never thought of TSJ as having a quick shot. He just has time because defenders are always giving him a step because of his ability to drive.

Let's say I sort of miss Plummer. I'd like Goode to be as confident as Plummer was. I'd be up for seeing him get a shot up for every 2 minutes he is on the floor. So if he gets 20 minutes, shoot 10 3's. Run actions to make it happen.
TSJ kinda has the same thing where he shoots way out in front of his body.

Yup. I think it looks a lot better with Coleman out there too….harder for TJ to drive when Dains in the paint/elbow.

Also thank you. Great breakdown for the board.
Coleman’s ability to pop, roll and facilitate from the top of key at least makes his man have respect him. Even if he’s not hitting that night, you can’t give a good passer clear sight of the floor (see Rondo).

Dain’s man can play drop and sag.

As somebody not in practices and therefore with no room to make any statements, I wish we would vary our screens. What I mean is we seem pretty intent on angling so that the defense has to go over and immediately assume a trail position, which creates an advantage. But it would be pretty awesome to see Dain just lay some pesky little guard out once a game.

If Nico is 80% of the player Davide was at TTU he will be awesome.

It doesn't seem like Brad trusts him yet but he would be the perfect type of Paxson/Kerr type of pg for this team that doesn't need the ball that often but can knock down 3's and keep the ball moving.
He had an open corner 3 and passed on it yesterday. I don’t think we have any evidence that he’s an average or better shooter

We don’t have a player on the roster that can shoot from the angles Plummer did. That’s pure stuff. We now just have catch and shoot guys.

True. But there’s ways to replicate some pressure in practice at least. Noise, distractions, can’t stop running until everyone makes two in a row, etc. Lots of other teams are able to figure out how to make their free throws. Can only blame the players up to a certain point…

My biggest concern at this point in the season (mid-Nov) is that it looks like we have a lot of the same weaknesses as last year. Disjointed, 3-pt dependent offense, lots of turnovers and poor fundamentals, and missing way too many free throws. I worry the coaching staff is just not able (or willing) to do what it takes to correct these.
Nope. This post is a prime example of having a narrative and whatever happens you are going to stick to that narrative. We are averaging 27 3-pt attempts per game, so far (4 games in…) and that number is very similar to many teams. Lots of turnovers? We had a lot of turnovers against Marquette (15), but that game was the outlier. Against Valpo and Oakland we only had 9. Poor fundamentals? What are they?

No one will argue about the team missing too many FTs.

As I recall, Plummer preferred to catch and shoot.

That's what I want Goode to do, be of mind to catch and shoot, more often.

Plummer was special as he could catch at many angles running pretty much full speed and square up so quickly. We don't have anybody with that kind of ability on this roster. His load up time was a fraction of what Goode needs. I think Luke can be great but not like Plummer was. The play that works well with Luke is someone (typically TSJ) beating his man and getting downhill toward the rim forcing rotations, then passing along the baseline to Goode as he slides to the corner. Saw it 2 or 3 times this past game.

Hes already taking 5 3s a game which is second on the team behind Shannon. His volume of shots per minute is already higher than most on the team.

If he can maintain anything close to his current 48% on threes he should fire away. Big if.

I observed around 3-4 times that he passed up a good look for his shot, in my opinion.

I think he should be higher volume on 3's than Shannon.

Just my opinion.

Luke’s not like Matthew Mayer or Plummer in that he has to be set, almost perfectly, for his shot to go in. So while he shoots at an incredible percentage, his opportunities to do so are limited compared to the others who could be more freewheeling.
Do notice him moving on his shot. Seems like he is falling away.

No narrative or agenda here.

Through the first 4 games we were mostly standing around the 3-pt line with 4 or 5 guys. We aren’t built to be that team. We have decent, but not lights-out shooters. We are built to play fast, lots of slashing and cutting, etc. Tonight’s game against Southern was much better. We looked inside first, had more off ball movement and quicker passing.

Turnovers still a problem. Can’t argue that. Had nearly 20 against Southern…

Are you really asking what I mean by poor fundamentals? Being strong with the ball, ball fakes and good passing, boxing out, free throw shooting, do I need to continue?

Just wondering...is there an Illinois vs Valpo game highlights video? I watched the one of Illinois beating Southern, but not Valpo. I was without my phone from Thursday evening through Sunday evening as I attended a Christian conference. So if there's a link to the video highlights of the Illinois vs Valpo game, that'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
