Illinois 95, Iowa 85 Postgame

True but you'd think after one of Brad's famous practices, the starters would've been more locked in on the defensive side. But, clearly they weren't until the line change in the 2nd half. It's not good but we'll take the win
A$$ meet bench is a great motivator. Lets see how Luke and Ty respond next time out.

We were sitting behind the basket at the South end of the stadium where the students were and we noticed that the students rolled out this curtain when Iowa went to the free throw line. The woman in back of us was laughing so hard. Did anyone else notice the curtain as well and see what they were doing? :ROFLMAO:

We have been doing this in the second half this year a bit...don't recall seeing it in the first half...but maybe? We are simply copying Arizona State's "Curtain of Distraction".

I love it, though.

This is probably the best offensive team in my lifetime and we are still talking about developing a true point guard? I see the reasoning if we were still in the days of Lou Do, but time has moved on. Better to find an on the ball defender and let the offense do whatever the hell they are doing to be the number one offense in the conference.
Moved up to #4 offense on KenPom 👀

That being said, I thought Moretti gave us a lift and a calming influence on the court by taking the pressure off Domask. So much is expected of him by this coaching staff in part by necessity because Moretti was injured much of the season is just rounding into form.

Things of note from yesterdays game.
1. Underwood said he had a long talk with Hawkins about his play. Probably should have had that talk 3 years ago instead of babying him.
2. John Beilein said Hawkins has great upside if he would just stop trying to referee the games and yelling at other players. Hawkins is known around the conference as a cry baby and is quite moody.-His whining at the end of the PSU game because the ref wouldn't give him the ball to shoot the free throws caused him to lose focus, miss the free throws and out of frustration lunged at 3 point shooter and lost the game.
3. I am still concerned about the lack of defense inside and our guards getting beat by quicker guards. In 4 of last 5 games the Illini are getting outscored inside by 5.5 points. They are also giving up almost 86 points a game and 2 of those games were by teams that are offensively challenged.
4. Iowa didn't play all that great today especially shooting the 3 but you can bet they will shoot it better at home.
5. With 4 games to go I think the Illini will be hard pressed to win 2 of them finishing 13-7 in conference and possibly in tie with Wisconsin, Northwestern, MSU for 2nd.

I thought I saw that as well. I think it still was on time but closer than it appeared to be with their replay
I wondered if the clock started late. I suspected that that was what they were checking on the replay: particularly whether one of our guys tipped the pass, in which case the clock should have started then.

Has anyone ever seen an entire starting lineup subbed for all at the same time other than when the outcome has already been decided near the end of the game? not sure if I've ever seen it before today, with an illini team or any other team. Not knocking it as I think it was a good decision by BU, just genuinely curious
Happens all the time in the NBA and in hockey even more. If you have the depth it helps especially late in an uptempo game. Iowa ended the game missing some layups and some midrange they had made earlier. Not saying it was only their legs but we definitely have the depth to do it in the future as well.

I can’t stop thinking of Hansberry’s potential and how much of an impact he can have come tourney time with more minutes finishing out the regular season.
I have to agree with several people on this. If Hansberry nico Dain and DGL can get a little more tick earlier in these games and even midway through the second half our starters will be a bit more rested come crunch time and it might even mean one or two of these guys coming off the bench help close out games depending on who’s playing well. I still think this team can be destined for great things. We’re a couple terribly sloppy plays and seconds away from being a 22-5 team and had Shannon never been suspended I contend we beat Maryland at home and we’re a 23-4 team. It’s that close! ILL!

Keady did it to us in the early 80s. Boilermakers were down by something like 20 points with 10 minutes left in the game. He put in "Mr. Beach" Jim Rowinski and several other bench players. Purdue ended up winning the game on a 20-foot bank shot from Rowinski at the end of the game.

It’s not that rare- I think every Illini coach has done it at some point, the oddity is that it’s usually when your team is down 20/being steamrolled and it’s a Hail Mary move to get something to change

I don’t think I’ve ever seen it in a close game like that before

Are we one of the only teams in the country not to have lost a game by double digits. Got to hope Pu loses two more games.

Quick scan of Ken Pom top 25 leaves only us and Duke as the only two without any double digit losses.

Good factoid to help maintain some perspective in trying times.... but still need to fix the leaky defense!

maybe the door has opened to rotate more often, fresh legs at crunch time

That win is because of our bench. The season felt like it was on the brink. A bold and correct move by Brad. It paid off and it might have saved the season. Thank goodness.
”A__ meets bench, bench retains a__. A__ transmits signal to brain, brain transmits signal to body. Body gets a__ off bench and plays better!”
Bobby Knight, former Whosier head coach.
