Illinois 96, Northwestern 66 Postgame

As Pat McAfee would say, the Illini have some absolute DAWGS on the squad this year. I was as disappointed as anyone when the TSJ news came through. But I believed then, and I still believe now, that this is a final 4 team. We will give Purdue all they can handle Friday night, and Purdue would be extremely lucky if they won that game. We have an experienced group of players. Our team reminds me of some of the experienced Villanova teams that would just suffocate teams.

I like to think Terrence is absolutely geeked watching his teammates play such inspired ball these last two games.

Feel like there was a lot of prep work for Purdue baked into today's gameplan. Unfortunately for him, Dain will hardly see the floor unless Edey goes out
Every player’s minutes is determined by how they fit into the game plan with their individual strengths and weaknesses. I don’t know why Dain didn’t play mop up minutes, but I’m sure it wasn’t an arbitrary decision. IMHO, Dain’s biggest weakness is defensively. For someone with great feet on offense, he struggles mightily with navigating switches on defense. Coaches make decisions on what they see and they see a lot more than we do.

Danger Zone
Dain had 2 rebounds in 4 mins. He played well while he was in. 1 was offensive with a put back which we know BU loves! I don’t think that was the problem.
The offensive rebound was an air ball that fell right to him. On the defensive end, he failed to block out at least a couple times, one of which led to an offensive rebound where Cohawk blocked the subsequent shot.

Like I said, I thought he played well overall, but if I had to guess why he didn’t see more minutes, I would say effort on defense and rebounding.

Really? I envision Dain getting a lot of minutes against Edey. We'll see.
But yeh, if Coleman can drag Edey outside and we can play more effective booty ball, that's fine with me.

The Doctor with 32 pts, 5 assists and I don;t know how many rebs...............
harmon with 20 pts and 3-4 3's..........
cohawk with ELITE D and hustled for a lot of pts..........

BU post game....................

we made shots...............
got really good shots ....
17 assists...........
cohawk was ELITE on defense..........
QG , JH and the doctor were on fire.................
we've been preparing very well all season.............
the shoot around today was strictly business...........
forced buie into 4 turnovers and zero assists......
we knew they would double team...........
we , again , made shots........
we are playing with very good spacing........
scoring over 100 and tonight 96 points goes a long way.......
Harmon with 20 tonight has been in the gym a lot ............
we are executing very well............
nobodies trying to be a hero............
everyone just wants to win above anything else.............
we are such a mature team that my staff asked me if I was ok because i wasn't yelling as much as usual.................lol
purdont will be another test for us as a top ten matchup.........................
The Pru-Meter is off the charts! That's a good sign.

Correct me if I am wrong, but was Domask trash talking the Wildcat defenders early in the second half?"
Big time in an old school 80s/90s sort of way. Nothing worse than a guy basically smiling at you every time he gets the ball, then sheer embarrassing you through complete domination and telling you with a smirk what you already know- you aren't capable of stopping him.

Domask pretty much broke Boo out there tonight. Frustrated him to the point of getting Boo to pick up a T.

Excellent point on how unusually awesome the team's shooting has been for the last two home games. I'm more worried about road games where we possibly can't dominate inside (if 3s aren't dropping), and we don't have a fantastic transition guy that was incredible at getting to the rim and hitting his free throws. It's going to take a huge team effort to continue this on the road against the BT. Go Illini!
Yeah, those we only win by 15. 😉

Early on here in the B1G (almost every team has played 2 games), it looks like effectively a 5 team league, with Ohio State a clear 5th. Top 4 of Purdue, Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan State look to be a good step above the rest. After that, who knows?

- Northwestern looked like the 6th best for a while but looked bad against Chicago State and again tonight.
- Nebraska beat MSU and Kansas State, but lost to Minnesota
- Iowa beat Seton Hall but is now 0-3 in the B1G with a home loss to Michigan
- Michigan has wins over Iowa, St. Johns and Stanford on the road, but is 6-7 overall with home losses to McNeese State and Long Beach State
- Rutgers has a road win over Seton Hall and a home win against Georgetown, but lost big to Illinois at home.
- Minnesota beat Nebraska but nobody else, and lost by 18 to San Francisco.
- Indiana is 2-0 in the B1G with a road win at Michigan, but were blown out by Auburn and UConn and haven't beaten anyone else of note.
- PSU and Maryland are somehow worse than the rest.

I will say the B1G doesn't look like it has an automatic win like it has in past seasons, but there is a mountainous gulf between the top 5 and the bottom 9.

That said, watch the Illini lose to Maryland next weekend because Illinois can't beat Maryland for whatever reason.
Great insights. However, I truly believe this year's Illini team will cover the spread against the Terrapins.

Can't say enough about this group. How do you lose an AA and then destroy a decent team by 30? So many well fought plays and decisions in this one. And the way they play together is a thing of beauty. Shades of 2005 ball movement.

I hope the guys on the bench see what team ball is and don't get discouraged. DGL, AH, are guys that can play, but need some time before they step up. Love the culture. Hope they keep it rolling.
