How many sixth year applications are there in a normal year? What percentage are denied?

There's no way he's heard anything specifically about his case but the 6th year guys that have been approved so far definitely gives him hope. Has anyone heard about a 6th year guy that's been denied for next year?

Keaton Moffitt of South Dakota State University was recently denied a sixth year of eligibility. Every case is different, there is no guarantee on any case either way.

The NCAA does not make announcements, so it is up to the school/players to announce the results of their appeal, whenever they want to, and IF they want to. There can be multiple cases where players have applied, got denied, and we never heard about.

His case looks like it was pretty easy to decide against him.

He probably qualified for a medical redshirt his freshman year, then played his sophomore year before transferring, sitting out a year, and then playing two more years at the new school.

As I interpret the rules, you have to miss two out of five years for reasons beyond the control of either the player or the coach. His decision to transfer and sit a year out was entirely within his control. That is probably why his case was decided so quickly.

Not likely now with twitter.

Depends. Obviously, in the highly publicized cases of people asking extra years (5th or 6th) it will eventually become known either way. But if a player is asking for a medical RS, it is not necessarily true that an announcement will be made, especially at smaller schools. Even for Abrams last year (a clear cut case of a medical RS) there was no official PR announcement when the NCAA made their decision.

I know everyone on this board buys into the grand conspiracy that the NCAA has it out just for Illinois and they are purposefully delaying their decision, but the NCAA has decided pretty swiftly in most known cases of 6th year, including already having made 6th year decisions this year (e.g., Chris Boucher, decision announced by Oregon on March 17, 2016).

Much depends when Illinois applied, but in the case of Abrams (pretty clear cut), unless Illinois delayed their application, I doubt the NCAA has purposefully delayed their decision. It may even be the case that Illinois knows, just may be waiting for Thorne to make a joint announcement.

Observations: The Big Ten is bound for a big shakeup in 2016-17

Illinois, Minnesota and Rutgers were also-rans last season but each enter next season with renewed hope, Syracuse needs stellar play from one of its freshmen and news and notes from around the nation

The Illini are still awaiting word on the status on several of their players for next year, most notably Kendrick Nunn (suspension), but should be a postseason team as long as they can stay healthy.

John Groce underwent a new level of Murphy's Law last year as his starting point guard (Tracy Abrams), power forward (Leron Black), and center (Mike Thorne) were lost for the season due to injury.

Black will miss the first four games of next year due to suspension, but Abrams is expected to back as the Illini's starting floor general.

Illinois also returns an All-Big Ten player in Malcolm Hill, a potential star in sophomore guard Jalen Coleman-Lands (10.3 points in 15-16), and a capable role player in 6-10 big man Michael Finke.

I expect good things from Kipper next season and great things throughout his career. Kid has a motor and desire to get better. Not sure how he ended up being ranked so low, but he passes the eye test.

Regarding NCAA, can they wait any longer to make a ruling on Abrams, Thorne, and Kipper? Duke had the fast track on their ruling. I'm under the impression that some recruits are waiting on the results of the 6th year guys and players under suspension.

Agree. Surprised how Kipper was ranked so low.

This has to be extremely frustrating for Groce and Co. As we we wait to hear about the waivers. Have to imagine it's in the next couple weeks.

Nichols is going to surprise an awful lot of people, however DJW will not be surprised. :)

Joel Goodson

ties will be resolved

Am hoping those two really push each other. The team and the players should benefit greatly.

Goodwin will ramp up the intensity further. Hope he comes.

I have to wonder if he is a better "practice" player than Legion, as he was the legendary practice player of all times.

His effort should translate to games. As far as contribution, I'm all for off-season hope and optimism, but he's a 3 star kid, ranked 270th by 247sports last year. That says something about where his skill level is, so I wouldn't set expectations too high.

Kippers ranking is a little bit of a head scratcher IMO. I'm letting myself get my hopes up the 3 star 270 thing isn't justified. Size+athleticism play a fairly big part in rankings and at 6'6" kipper is built and apparently can throw it down. Highlite tapes are highlite tapes but he also didn't look completely raw offensively to me. We'll see.

I don't trust any rankings past the top 100. 270th is pretty low but he had similar stats in AAU as VJ King, while playing on the same team so that gives me hope that he can be much better than his ranking. I'm not sure if he'll be a guy that will wow you with his stats, I'll be happy with him being an energy guy off the bench, even if it's only 10-15 minutes a game.

O.G. Anunoby was #280 and Nichols has a redshirt year on him. Nichols will be the best defender on the team. Of course, that's not saying much. :)
That AAU team was one of the best in the country.
