Why the heck would Childress retire from the NFL to work at Illinois?? Also, given the length of time this search has taken and the names now being rumored, it really makes you wonder whether Lovie had someone lined up when he fired McGee (or whether that person bailed out). This is not going the way I expected. :tsk:

We DO need better, energetic recruiters who can close. Speaking of which, does it concern anyone else that in two recruiting cycles our 5-time Pro-Bowl linebackers coach hasn't yet landed a single prominent LB?:noidea:

He started at the UofI as a player then coached here, is from the state. Why not have your swan song be. Came here to help get things turned around before riding off into the sunset of coaching, Pretty much the same thing Lovie is trying to do

Agreed. Completely hypothetical: If it's Childress - OC, with Van Malone and Aaron Moorehead as the other assistants, would anyone complain?

With the understanding that the chance of his happening is nil, that would be a great group of hires.

Anyone see Scheelhaase's tweet? "Loyalty is a two way street "

Wonder if that's in reference to a coaching position.

Been wondering that as well. Speculation was the 10th assistant was between him and Patterson. I'd be happy either way. Wondering what he meant by it. Guess we'll find out Monday

It was deleted quick. Now claiming it's a old Ludacris lyric. Who knows

I would think Scheelhaase’ tweet means he’s not been hired.

Well if this means that Patterson gets the job, I'm OK with it. I guess we'll see.

Lol - this is absolutely ridiculous - I understand that Lovie likes to operate stealth but this is too much. Perception is everything in college and right now, he is looking incompetent. If you have hired SOMEONE put the name out there.

IlliniMed,
Couldn’t agree more. Enough already. This “search” has gone on way to long. When I say this many will accuse me of being negative. I’m not being negative I’m just stating the obvious.
Schools all over the country are filling their open spots. Way past time for us to do the Same!

Unless you have inside knowledge of the negotiations/search this sounds more like fan impatience than incompetence.

The perception is that we are a really bad football program and I don't think announcing our new assistants a week earlier is going to change that. Better to get the right coaches than be first to announce

Anyone other than Patterson or Scheelhaase for the 10th assistant is a bad move. We need more college guys who can recruit than more NFL guys whom we have plenty of

Because we're talking about it right now. That should not be happening. We all know perception is everything right now and the perception is BAD. No winning seasons and we already fired our OC. I may know the intricicies of it because I follow the team but to the casual observer its "Illinois is just being Illinois again"

This still sounds like you just want to know who it is rather than it having an impact on the program. I'm not sure what this perception you keep referring to is about.

Recruiting? We are mostly finished.

Nationally? Probably a dozen or so folks know we don't have an OC at this point?

Our fans? Probably only two dozen of them care about this with a majority of the departed not coming back until we start winning.

+1000000

I'd rather get the hires right. Sounds like we'll hear an announcement Sunday or Monday anyway.

“Recruiting we’re almost finished” I sure hope not. What are we ranked 12th in the Big10?
That why we need to get this job DONE!

Because unless the new OC is still coaching one of the few NFL teams still playing, this sure looks like (a) Lovie didn't have anyone lined up to replace McGee before he fired him, and (b) he's whiffed on fall back choices. Both of those things do not look good. Of course, all will be forgotten if the hire is a home run, but if not ...

We are almost finished there is a limited amount to give out. Hopefully we snag a couple good ones late though.

Or there have been negotiations going on. Or guys have been on vacation with their families after long season. Or with all the moving chairs in college and NFL Lovie waited to see who would be available. We just don't know what the situation is and assuming the worst doesn't make much sense.
