The edgy Tim doesn't show up in my response, but in reference to it, I think his info is wrong.
While Kramer may count as a 2017 due to how scholarships can be moved to various classes with some limitations, if he enrolls in the fall of 2016, his athletic clock begins ticking immediately. Unless I am mistaken, it does not matter if you are an athlete or not.
In other words, to truly be a gray shirt, I think he needs to enroll in January 2017, taking the fall off from all collegiate classes, even juco ( for example trying to get some credits under his belt.)
If he enrolls this fall, he will still have five years to play four, which is simply a "normal" progression of any athlete, i.e. A redshirt year is available to you. If he enrolls in January, his clock begins then, which gives him in a sense 5-1/2 years to play four.
Am I missing something?
Edit: either way welcome aboard young man!
