His father was coach by Lovie at Tennessee in the mid-90s.

Amazing how many connections both Lovie and this staff have.

I have no idea if it will pay off in this instance but you can guarantee it will pay off in a number of them

I am ignorant here being as someone who is more familiar with the basketball recruitment period. However, I am curious as to what the general timeline is for football recruiting?

Clearly Lovie is out making offers as we speak. When do kids generally start making decisions?

This was interesting to me too so I made a little graph for you of all Illinois commitments over the last 10 years (that eventually signed with us).

Most commitments are given following visits, and the prime visiting seasons as you can see are during the summer and after the high school season ends. Signing Day is Day 0 and is the first Wednesday in February, FYI.

Well after all of the excitement from the day Lovie was hired and the asst. coaches search, it looks like we're all going to be twiddling our thumbs for a bit. So depressing...

Awesome - Thank you for pulling that together, Sir. What isn't awesome is having to wait a few months for any positive results. That's okay. I'll be patient.

You probably have to throw that list away from the last ten years because Illinois will be recruiting a different student/player/family. The new reecruits and their families will be more interested in how to get to the NFL than as in the past can I get enrolled at Illinois and get to play. I think this is a new place where we have never been. Will be so much fun to watch the program develope.

A good way to look at it might be that they aren't being rushed to put together a class in a few months like someone hired in November or December might be. They basically have an entire recruiting cycle to identify targets, extend offers, get them on campus for games, and try to secure commitments. Should help them nail down a great 2017 class.

Recruiting

The good news is that it’s been an NCAA Quiet Period since Signing Day. The first day after Signing Day (which was February 3rd) where coaches can have off-campus contact with recruits is April 15th. So the staff will have three weeks to set up a plan on how to attack the six week Evaluation Period that begins April 15.

Lovie reaching out to prominent high school coaches in state

"When he sits down in somebody's living room, that's impressive to anyone who has grown up in Chicago," Holecek said. "You trust the man. He has tremendous respect as a mentor to players. It's all positive from my end."

"I didn’t mind Coach (Tim) Beckman, but I think early on that is one thing they struggled with, not connecting with the high school coaches and not making that a priority.”

That is HILARIOUS.

Ok, Kool-Aid guy first. I think we get several good commitments in April. Players will want to get on board early and secure their spot. I think kids will be start struck with Lovie and their parents will be star struck with Lovie and Nickerson.

Ok, now logical guy. I think we’ll see some good action on social media and get some interest from guys who normally wouldn’t consider Illinois. I think Illini gets some positive buzz in April.

The Kool Aid guy and the logical guy almost seem to be the same guy. :D

This has actually been good timing. Managed to get the staff in place and have enough time to develop a bit of a strategy. Didn't have to worry about other teams being out recruiting while we were worrying about trying to get a staff in place.

Indeed. Complete masterstroke. Un-be-live-a-ble.

It will be interesting to see what happens when they can actually recruit and how many of the cold guys turn warm. Going through it last night not many were there but I think this staff will turn a few people around. Can't wait till they can get out on the road

Yes with Lovie and this staff the recruiting season will have a life of its own. It will be fun. For those who count stars, we will probably see a serious bump there, but what I am looking for is the offer lists of the recruits we target. If we can get in the door(and we should) with guys that are also looking at our competition in the BIG, and we begin to pull a few our way it would be a very good sign for the future. Also appears we are going heavy into Florida and beginning to emphasize Texas and now California....given our current staff backgrounds. Things look bright.....and that alone is a major improvement in Illini football.
