I guess it just goes to show that established coaching staffs that have built relationships can trump a name like Lovie Smith. This is going to be a standard rebuild of 4 years at least but with the ability to accelerate if we have a good first season.

Let's hope we can get enough solid players to make it through the drop off from the large senior exodus after this upcoming season.

Tommie why???!

Jk I know it came out they're not actually related. On to the next...

Count me in the "slightly concerned" category. I'm still all in on Lovie (obviously - we're in an infinitely better position than we otherwise would have been) - but looking for some traction on the recruiting front sooner than not.

The logical side of my brain is saying "patience, faith." But unfortunately the past few decades of Illini football has erased those words from my vocabulary.

If you're still an Illini fan at this point, you're definitely not lacking in patience or faith. :D

I figured things would start slowly... but not quite *this* slowly. We're going to need a heck of a showing on the field this fall, or we might have a real problem going forward.

After listening to lovie I am ok with his process, it's going to take time ,gotta have kids that WANT to come here. This stuff about going off a cliff over recruiting is getting annoying. 4 months ,that's what he has had. Step back and realize that we have a very professional coach now.

It seems since I am useless with electronic devices i will need to rewrite what I had send to TCR.
Tales of the tape.
First new terminolgy and rating system this year.
5* 9.5- 10
4* 8-9
High 3* 7-7.5
Mid to high 3* 6.5
Mid 3* 6
Low 3* 5-5.5

Starting with some of the defensive ends
Olalere Oladipo Il 6'4 235
Needs work on shedding blockers quickly not bad in the least but room for improvement. Very aggressive with a full portion of nasty and passion the kind of thing to inspire play by teammates on the field. A guy that enjoys the contact a very big hitter that goes hard and fast until the whistle blows. Ton of upside with and excellent first step. Big power that means he can sde/wde and with another 40 # a little 3tech. Ex closing sp. One of my favorite tapes so far this year. with work on angels and shedding = hands and moves a 4*
Ex sp,qu, burst, st and power.
Rating high 3 nearly 4* 7.5-8.0:thumb:
Lawson Paulino- Bell Fl 6'4 235
I am posting this with O O's to give you and idea of how good O O looks as they appear to be the same size.
Plays with controlled aggression, vision, explosive first step, big hitter, with exceptional burst exceptional closing sp and burst. Ex ball awareness also very aggressive and lil nasty . Same tool box as O O's save just a hair more .
Rating 4* 8-8.5

I just realized if we land O O you might hear a lot of oh, ohs when were on defense

I heard there's going to be a a big event this weekend that's going to get a lot of out-of-state prospects on campus. It sounds like something the staff has been planning a little while. Hopefully we see some movement.

This stuff about going off a cliff over recruiting is getting annoying.

This stuff is the stock-in-trade of what college coaching is. Projecting dignity at a podium is great. Getting 17 year olds to put the photoshopped picture of themselves in your uniform on their Instagram feed is what the job actually is.

It has been a disastrous start, below any reasonable expectations, there is no sugarcoating it.

The honeymoon period is huge for recruiting for any new staff, and we have utterly bellyflopped.

He started in March, and couldn't get out and recruit on the road until June. Relax and look long term, not short term. 2018 will give us a MUCH better clue how Lovie and staff will recruit

They may very well also be facing headwinds at that point that they aren't now. If this season is ugly on the field, and it might be, the narrative is going to be a lot less rosy than it is now. Narratives don't come much more rosy than this staff's is right now.

That may be the case but the constant griping and questioning of Quality coaches, I use that term widely across all of football coaching jobs. The last I checked we have been a kicking board for negative recruiting we were a mess. How do you bring recruits into that in 4 months. He is reshaping our program and has a lot of highly respected coaches vouching for him. Our jobs as fans is to SUPPORT him and the program not drag it down. This is going to take time he is working everything about us is new right now.:shield:

Anything more you can share?

It would certainly be nice to get a commitment or two from guys this staff has targeted.

It could be ugly as we don't have depth on offense. But why don't you give a coaching staff more than 4 months before freaking out? This is a longterm project, not a quick fix.

Other splashy hires do all the time. This period is typically a rich vein of recruiting for new staffs across the country, and there is no question that it was intended to be the same for Lovie. He has stepped up to the plate and is striking out left and right.

I am more excited for the Lovie era than most, I think. I'm not giving up. But the results don't start on September 8th. They started on March 7th. Stuff is happening, it matters, and it's going horrendously. I don't see what the point is in pretending that it doesn't exist.

No one is pretending; we're just giving the coaches time. And what coaches came straight from NFL to college that was a non-powerhouse and got immediate results?

I don't have time to sift through Rivals to answer that question in a data-rich way right now, but Jim Mora Jr. springs to mind.

Let's compare his first class to Lovie's, but I'd bet he was hired around December to January. Plus, he's in a perfect location for recruits. So JMJ should have better results his first time around.
