Don't think so. And that's assuming 100% of the top Illinois preps play for us, which is obviously a pipe dream.

Maybe not top 15 every year but, certainly better than we have been the last 10 years.... maybe?

You're wrong, and I accept that. Study the rosters of the major college programs. It's staggering how many good players come from Illinois. I have coached high school ball in Illinois, Florida, Georgia, and Arizona, was offered a job in Texas...so I have a firm grasp on the quality of players available.

If Illinois was able to secure half of the top 20 from Illinois every year, not only would it be huge for the Illini, but it would hurt NW, Wisconsin, Michigan, Michigan State, and Notre Dame.

So, let's put that in rap terms: 10 of the top 20 every year from Illinois, half of which redshirt, so after five years, you have 45 top-tier Illinois kids on your roster. Supplement that with some quality kids from around the country, and Illinois is easily top 15.

For the current AP top 15 teams there are 40 players that come from Illinois; for the AP top 25 there are 65 players that come from Illinois (break down below). That means an average of 2.7 Illinois players per top 15 team and an average of 2.6 Illinois players per top 25 team.

Not sure if that supports either side’s point of view, but thought I would put some real numbers into this. Obviously, the big thing is the quality of the players.

Alabama 0, Penn. State 5, Georgia 0, TCU 0, Wisconsin 11, Ohio St. 3, Clemson 0, Miami 1, Notre Dame 14, Oklahoma 3, Ok. State 2, Washington 0, Va. Tech. 0, N.C.St. 1, Wash. St. 0, Mich. St. 12, S. Florida 0, C. Florida 0, Auburn 1, Stanford 1, USC 2, W. Virginia 2, LSU 0, Memphis 1, Iowa St. 6

Am curious how many of those 40 are starters or see significant playing time? (not suggesting that that's an end all, fully understand that lower classmen are frequently buried on the depth chart, yet they have a lot of promise).

Good analysis, BTW.

From the looks of it, if we was just able to stymie Wisconsin and Michigan State, we would be a Top 15 team.

For kicks, I looked at Michigan's roster, who played their way out of the top 25. I was surprised they only have four Illinoisans. Ty Isaac is the most well known. Michael Sessa is a walk-on RS Fr QB who wouldn't fit Illinois' offense anyway. Ian Bunting was a fairly highly recruited TE who is a RS Jr and hasn't seen the field much. Jordan Glasgow is a walk-on S who this year as a RS So earned a scholarship. Mostly plays special teams. Interesting tidbit is that two of his brothers also walked on at Michigan and are now playing in the NFL.

My take away is that there is definitely talent in Illinois, but it might be hard to find, and the numbers don't tell the story.

The roster analysis from the current Top 15 is instructive, but there are a ton of good Illinois products who are among the better players on lesser ranked or unranked teams. Take Mizzou, for instance. They have Terry Beckner, DT from ESL, and Albert O, the tight end from SH-G. Those are two of their five top players and both project to be NFL type talents.
The Oseland kid (OL) from SH-G is better than Megginson, and if the Illini had kept him away from Minnesota, he would possibly be protecting a redshirt for Alex P or Vederian Lowe.

Recently, the Pocic kid (Lemont) started on the Oline for 4 years at LSU, and LaQuon Treadwell (Crete) was a star in the SEC.

Illinois gets underrated as a state in talent production because the Illini don't consolidate that talent and keep it at home. There's enough talent in the state to keep Illinois ahead of most schools. Keep it home for a few years, let some wins pile up, then watch the recruiting take off under Lovie's successor.

ESPN had a list, at least a few years back now, that had Illinois listed at number 5 overall for producing football talent. Behind Ohio, Florida, Texas and Cali.

Side note: we were number 1 for basketball players.

Just saw where Werner says that dual QB James Foster (recently de-committed from Missouri) is planning an Illinois visit.

Just saw where Werner says that dual QB James Foster (recently de-committed from Missouri) is planning an Illinois visit.

We were pushing for him after Coran committed. I remember Coran sent a tweet his way asking him to join him at Illinois but Foster committed to Missouri rather quickly.

He's got some nice offers and is planning a number of other visits. If he's visiting us, we obviously have a chance, however.

After reading more about the James Foster de-commitment, I think it's glaringly obvious that he is probably going to end up at LSU. He received an offer from them less than 24 hours ago:

There was talk of him visiting Illinois before he de-committed from Missouri (possibly this weekend?) but it will be interesting to see if he still does now that he has the offer from LSU?

Missouri's recruiting class is falling apart. That's the third de-commit this month for them:

As to the comment about Michigan only having 4 illinoisians, Michigan and tOSU have never raided Illinois except for a small handful of elite recruits. ND, Iowa, Wisky and others have taken our talent. Those are the schools we need to compete with. Keeping Illinois talent away from programs that are historically our equals is the key.

Historically our equals would be Vandy, Indiana, Purdue, Kansas, Colorado, and Valdosta State.

Verdis Brown takes official visit to Illinois

Probably not going to sway him, but the door's still ajar.

FSU hasn't exactly been great this year, but yeah, it would be hard to flip him. We were recruiting him as a DT if I remember correctly and we already have a glut of those on the roster. Green, Oladipo and Pate are the only true Freshmen from the last class who have not played yet and we have Avery committed already.

He's been on campus so many times that he's probably just here to visit some friends. If it's getting paid for via an official visit then why not come?

Yo can never have enough DT's, especially of the caliber of Brown.

That said, I agree it's doubtful.

Dayven Coleman

Dayven Coleman decommitted from UCLA and is scheduled to visit us on December 15th:

He was supposed to visit us for the Wisconsin game but that obviously got pushed back. He's also visiting Colorado on December 8th.

We also got a CB from Steve Wiltfong today for Coleman, which is a good sign, so we'll see what happens.

Looks like a good fit at Nickel or OLB.
