Would you say it’s still half empty?

Are you implying I’m being pessimistic? I’m not. Just stating the facts. Hopefully we can add some more talent to the class by selling playing time etc. but the reality is, this is a key class for our rebuild, and it’s hard to be entirely optimistic. There’s some real talent there, but if we want to compete in the B1G we need comparable recruits. .

That being said, I’m excited about M.J. Rivers, coran Taylor, and the big boys from bishop dunne.

I can only assume a big push will be seen once the season is over

It’s nice to have a higher rating but it seems after you get past the traditional powers at the top 3 or 4, the next ten schools have mostly three stars with a four or five added in. Can anyone really say the eighth rated class is so much better than 13 or 14?

MJ Rivers highlights from 11/16/17 game.
This guy is our best QB recruit since Scheelhaase.

Yes. No doubt. His play reminds me a lot of Nate, too. Great poise in the pocket, good at avoiding sacks, great downfield vision through the whole length of the play, and good runner. Only thing I don't like is he might be a little too aggressive sometimes. I saw a highlight there where he completed a pass to a guy as he was about to get sacked but probably should have tucked it to avoid a potential fumble. That probably won't fly as often in college but I'm sure he'll learn.

Per Rivals, we're ranked 72 out of all teams (and 14th in the Big). Number 8 (Indiana) in the conference is ranked 35 out of all teams. That's a pretty good sized gap, unfortunately.

I’m not sure what to make of this rebuild at this point. I still feel like Lovie was a good choice and think it can work. I am very surprised that recruiting hasn’t picked up more than it has though. At this point I am really hoping that this staff is hitting home runs in talent evaluation because if they are not this isn’t gonna happen for several more years. Really thought Lovie would be in on more high profile recruits.

I don't think the staff is all that impressed by star ratings given to recruits by "gurus" and rating services. Calibear seems to have a good method of evaluating talent and he seems to have seen the merit in some of the staff's selections. I'm cautiously optimistic that two more recruiting classes like the one that gave us the current crop of freshmen will go a long way toward making us competitive in the Big Ten.

We just need to field a Big Ten caliber team before we worry about getting 5* recruits. Boy, that's really sad to type.

I did think that Lovie's name recognition would open more doors, especially on defense. Also, I thought that the moms would trust Lovie with their sons. Maybe it is happening, and I just don't see it.

I get what you're saying, but yes.......you always would rather be #8 than #14. Always.

#14 out of 14 is bad news. There is no conceivable way to sugar coat that.

Frankly, I thought the biggest upside Lovie would bring would be name recognition which would pay off in recruiting. But, that doesn't appear to be happening.

Yes, we can put our hopes that he'll "coach 'em up", but we start from a disadvantaged position when we have inferior talent all over the field.

In short, if we don't improve recruiting, we can forget about getting this program to where we want to be. My estimation, at least.

This this this this.

Spot on.

Lack of success, inferior facilities, empty stadium, uninspired fan base etc. This is why we can’t recruit. We’re fighting with a blindfold on. Sadly, doesn’t look like this is going to change during lovies tenure.

On the bright side, we can sell early playing time and a tradition of putting people in the NFL. Hopefully we can swing a few recruits our way before signing day

For those that follow closely. Who are our top realistic targets?

It only matters if your a star watcher, Alot of very good players dont star off highly rated out of high school

Here is how the star thing works. When our recruits have 4 or 5 of them it is a really big deal. I’m talking these are sure fire studs. When our recruits have 2 or 3 of them it doesn’t matter because everyone is missing the boat on what a hidden talent we have unearthed. The ratings services also all have an inexplicable desire to lower the rating of anyone Illinois recruits. Perhaps they all had IDs taken away at Kams when they were underage. Don’t know but there is some deep seated hatred there.
Seriously though, you aren’t going to win in the big 10 recruiting like this. It has to get better. I know we are playing a lot of young kids but I think Ohio Stat could have scored 100 on us if they needed to. Still in Lovies corner but he needs to start recruiting better athletes.

I wonder if this means that one of our RBs is going to transfer(Corbin)? I wasn't expecting Illinois to take 2 RBs in this class.

I would expect a lot of nonfreshman to transfer....

Just to give some information along the lines of team rankings, here are the last 5 years worth of recruiting rankings.

These rankings make up the 5 classes that should be the majority of a team's 85 scholarship players this year. Classes are the '13 class through '17. (Source is composite 247 rankings)

Average B1G ranking in parenthesis:

1) tOSU (1)
2) UM (2.6)
3) PSU (3.2)
4) MSU (4.2)
5) Neb (4.6)
6) UW (6.2)
7) Mary (6.2)
8) IU (10)
9) NW (10)
10) RU (10.2)
11) Iowa (10.6)
12) UI (11)
13) Min (11.6)
14) PU (13.6)

To give perspective to BZup's question, it seems there isn't really that much of a difference between 8 and 13. (in terms of rankings) What it really comes down to is identifying those 3 star athletes that have potential and coach them up. A better indicator than star rankings once you get past the 4 stars is offer lists. Lovie and staff picked up recruits with much better offer lists in their 2017 class than Beckman/Cubit did.

Staff is working hard to flip a few big names
Ayodele Adeoye (LB)
Verdis Brown (OL)
Stanley Garner (DB)

Top Uncommitted
Dallas Craddieth
Dayven Coleman
John Jackson

These are the biggest names. A couple more may surface after the early signing period:chief:

I was thinking that as well, but Corbin could move out to a WR spot, but this year showed us we didnt have enough talent at RB with everyone getting hurt. No matter what we have to replace one, and adding a 2nd might let us RS someone for a change.

look, until we get quarterbacks who can run an entire offense and distribute the ball to a decent group of receivers, we're stuck on 2-9. please let us find a decent juco or grad transfer qb who can get us organized and deliver the ball... please?
