Using mean is inherently not the best way of calculating a small sample size (which 20 recruits is) due to outliers.

It would probably be best to compare mean and median.

This....

I'm just saying...need to look beyond only the total score.

Is Illinois still dead last in the B1G recruiting class rankings? :shield:

For now. I expect more recruits to push us up. I'm honestly not really worried about a ranking. I trust this staff knows what they're doing.

Out of curiosity, what are you basing this on? I find it hard to get a read on this kid one way or another. However, you can see in his recruitment video that he burned one of our letters so I really don't see why he
wouldn't put a hat on a table and not pick us. No big deal to me if he does that since he has obviously has the right to go wherever he wants

In my opinion, it's kind of odd to have a commitment video AND have multiple hats on a table. Generally, the reason for the hats is to have an exciting reveal. But if you have already "committed" by video, then you have removed the suspense.

Granted, he could be doing this exactly to build up the suspense again, only to pick up the Texas hat. Which is fine. Just not normally how it is done.

Luke Ford on Twitter:

"Top 5... #ILLINI #GoDawgs #WarEagle #GigEm #RollTide #NoOrder Thankful and Blessed

#Lion4Life #CHS"

Is he including #ILLINI just to be nice to his home state? Are we Miss Congeniality? Re the quarterback situation: Ford would be looking at MJ Rivers--also Class of 2018--as a teammate. I'm not sure why we would be completely out of the running for Ford. I'm not holding my breath on any of the kids, but jeez, for us to snare an Alabama/Auburn offer? Roll over, Tide.

And at Georgia he'd be looking at Justin Fields or Jake Fromm throwing him the ball for the duration of his career. It's no comparison. MJ Rivers being his anticipated QB is a negative in that race, if anything. Putting us in his top 5 was a respectful gesture to his home state and nothing more.

I don't know how others on the board feel, but I'm less interested in the 247 overall score than i am the average score per recruit. 247 gives points for quanity and quality, and I'm much more interested in the quality as our # of open scholarships, depth by position plays into the recruitment process/ class.

That being said, we are ahead of Rutgers, Indiana, and Purdue and within striking distance of Northwestern and several others.

FWIW, I wholly agree. One additional point (not directed at you): using these rankings/ratings as an absolute arbiter of a class is sheer folly. The best one can say is that the overall score gives a fair idea of how one fared.

I would add that once you get past the top three or four schools there is not a lot of separation between the rest. It then comes down to filling needs and coaching them up.

Wishful thinking.

Just take a look at the average position ranking for a typical Iowa or Wisconsin recruit vs. an Illinois recruit. There is actually quite a bit of separation between classes largely comprised of three star recruits. One class might by largely top 1000 Power 5 kids while another class might be full of 3 star kids outside of the top 1000 and lacking Power 5 offers. There is a BIG difference between those classes.

Well, we’ll find out shortly.

lol. If he doesnt want illinois he wouldnt show us the time of day at all. He has alot of former players in his ear right now and he see's the potential. If you have the skillset you will get to the NFL. Why wait 2-3 years to get playing time at another school when you can start RIGHT now with former NFL coaches.

Thanks to everyone who gave some perspective on the relative success of this class to years prior. Follow up question...

Obviously, part of Lovie’s pitch is his familiarity with the NFL. So far he has coached 4 players into the NFL. How much credit does the staff get for that?

I just think that if this team can get out of the cellar, the NFL experience on this staff could be very attractive to recruits who may not normally consider us.

This is just my gut feeling, but I’d be surprised if cumulative class rankings over, say, 10-20 years, didn’t correlate fairly well with average league finish over the same time period. I wouldn’t expect 1-14 to line up exactly with 1-14, but I’d guess it’d be reasonably close.

Haven't been this excited about Illini football in a long long time.

Just remember that you were excited. Next year will be a long grind with a low win total. Stay excited for 2019 and 2020. If some dominos fall this week it could be a very merry Christmas here in the UC.

:)

And that's where we need to be right now. If the staff can recruit on par and then out coach the others we should pull ahead. I just want to regularly beat the snot out of Northwestern in basketball and football again. We passed embarrassing a few years ago.

And can we not have a stupid marketing campaign that makes it all worse and maybe NOT roll something out until after we have a winning product on the field?

We believe (in miracles).
Our state... our apologies.

The one thing that's really telling is that he's been on campus so many times. He wouldn't come here that often if there wasn't genuine interest. Illinois also wouldn't waste time on an in-home visit if they didn't think they had a chance here.

This is just my thinking. I also think that most people take the commitment video the wrong way. He burns his recruiting letters from the schools that recruited him and the fire tells him where to go. This means that he burned the Texas letter too. Yes, you see the Illinois letter burning, but you see the letters of other schools clearly burning too.

I'm expecting a bad year. We'll be starting freshman and sophomores. Can still be excited about this class though.

I'm not that surprised that we lost out on Anderson or Petersen, but Petersen is the bigger loss here IMO.

It'll be interesting to see if we target another RB in the class but we have to get at least one DE.

Me too! With a little luck a late push could give us a really solid class. I'll be there for basically every game next year. It was fun seeing the young kids get better this year, and I was looking forward to big payoff next year. However, I think we're going to play a LOT of freshmen again next year. It's brutal but it's promising.
