If I was MJ Rivers, not sure how I would feel about this...
You'd feel like you did this season when you had to compete to get a shot at the starting job. When you accept a D1 scholarship, you know that PT is not guaranteed and that competition is best for the team. May the best man win, and may the next best man do everything he can to help the team in the meantime (scout team, working with second string, etc.) and do everything he can to be ready when called on. If you don't see that and you're not ready for that, then you're going to have a rough time as a football player.

The new redshirt rules make it easier on Rivers. Transfer and sit out a year or stay and be the backup, hopefully play sparingly, and then still have 3 full seasons left after a second year of development.

Dorsey did it under a different OC tho

Probably a realistic, maybe even low-bar expectation for Luke Ford
Arizona TE Bryce Wolma - under Rod Smith
2017: Emerged as team’s starting tight end as a true freshman … Played in all 13 games with seven official starts to his credit … Third on the team with 28 receptions, totaling 241 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The 28 catches are the most for a true tight end at Arizona since Rob Gronkowski in 2008 … A key cog in the Pac-12’s top rushing attack, which ranked third nationally in regular season with 324.4 yards per game

Ranking the rumored transfers is likelihood of transferring to Illinois (based on only what I've read on this forum):

1. Jeff Thomas
2. Khalil Tate
3. Unknown Big 12 WR
4. Luke Ford (just don't see this happening)

Thomas, Tate, Ford, Beason, Wilson. These are the types of players I thought Lovie would bring in when he was first hired and had his staff with NFL experience.

Who's Wilson?

Although I agree with your ideology...

Tate transfers here he is the starter Day1. That is the second year in a row you have brought in a 5th year over your recruits. Rivers won’t see it the way you described it. He doesn’t want to be a back up as he is good enough to play somewhere at the D1 level and that is his goal. Look at the Bryant kid at Clemson. Sitting and watching isn’t in their DNA.

It is someone who had sent me an email and to whom I had just replied, duh. Yes, I meant Williams. Thanks for catching that.
Thanks. Wasn’t sure if it was some mystery transfer.

Would like to think we have a shot with Tate because of OC connection. Don’t see Ford coming. Thomas was a handful at ESL, and I don’t mean that in a good way. Even if he does transfer to the Illini, I think it is a long shot he actually plays a down. Hope I am wrong.

That documentary, 89 Blocks, that focused heavily on Jeff's Senior season at ESL was eye opening and not in a good way. There's a poster that frequents here named Title who has connections to ESL and I'm curious to know what he thinks about this. The documentary also focused on Estes and how Missouri was trying to get Thomas/Estes in a package deal. Every time that Estes visited they'd ask about Jeff but I didn't get the feeling that Jeff liked Missouri. Jeff at least visited us unofficially two years ago.

Regardless of the baggage, you take him. Even beyond his ability as a WR, he could be our PR as well. How nice would it be to have a guy back there who isn't running away from the ball out of fear and has the potential to take the ball to the house every time he touches the ball? He'd be a total game changer. He could turn out to be another Green-Beckham but we have to take a chance on him.

Don't get me started on Tate. Arizona was third in the country in rushing yards in 2017. A backfield with Tate, Corbin and a healthy Epstein would be deadly. Just add some guys who can catch the freaking ball to keep defenses honest and this could be one of the top rushing teams in the country with this OL.

I have Beason slotted in as the PR next year, but I'm sure Thomas would also work. Good problems to have.

Assuming Brohm leaves for Louisville, would love for Illinois to re-engage with Dave Monnot III and get involved with Khali Saunders.

Also, a lot of crystal balls already changing on Purdue commits. They could see this class fall apart very quick if Brohm announces he's leaving. They have four 4* commits and could lose all of them.

One of the insiders on here said the Big 12 WR is Sterling Galban
