We're the destination for QBs who get beat out at powerhouses like Rutgers and Syracuse. That says a lot. Hopefully this will work out, but that says a lot.
I mean, I don't think Brandon and Art had 8 plays between them that were better than the worst play on that highlight real (which I would say was the underthrown ball around the mid-way point that was probably only caught because it looks like the DB tore his ACL on the play).
This seems like a solid, not stellar, answer for next year. And with Art out for spring ball, very important to make it happen this early and start the integration process before mid-July.

He raises the floor I think and that’s a good thing. I was really hoping for someone with multiple years of eligibility left, but I assume the staff felt this was our best option and the risk of waiting too long for a better candidate was high. If he can play like good Brandon we will be fine.
Perhaps this will help in recruiting an impact WR transfer? We have a decent core, but could really use a little more.
OLine is a stil huge need, but I feel strangely confident in the staffs ability to put that together.

If he can make quicker reads than Brandon, and has a quicker release with decent accuracy, It'll be an upgrade.
Brandon was a decent QB, but that long, slow release and slow read times really hurt us in so many situations.

Running ability? Thank God yes!
Realistically, knowing we can expect to get at this point in the rebuild, this type of QB is EXACTLY what I was hoping for.

QB: I think the key thing here is getting a guy here now. While DeVito isn't thrilling, I echo others in saying who out there is better, available now and wants to be here?
DeVito: we can hope that Peterson and a lot of D1 experience make him up to the task. He doesn't have to be great, he just has to manage the game well and be pretty good. Anything beyond that is gravy.

Apologies, my comparison might be a little dated
I realize highlights are just that, but Devito seems to run well and have a good sense of the pocket. He also seems to throw a pretty good ball. I feel like he is an upgrade from what we had this past year at QB. Granted a blind monkey would be an upgrade.
After watching those highlights Deuce Spann has to be pretty excited.
It’s just that my Beavs are taking some abuse in the Arizona b-ball thread (rightfully so), so had to stand up for them here.
To your point though, coming off a 2-5 season and with their preferred starter expected to be out for at least a portion of this year with injury (never got back), Oregon State brought in a mediocre transfer from Colorado (Sam Noyer). He started game 1 and was relieved by Chance Nolan, number 1 JC QB coming out in 2020 who closed out last year as the starter.
Oregon State’s 2022 QB room is probably looking like what BB hopes to have soon. They’ve got a returning starter in Nolan who is All Pac 12 honorable mention. Not sure if their injured QB (Gebbia) will ever play, but the backups include #31 pro-style QB and overall #761 in 2020, in-state recruit and #51 QB and #733 overall recruit in 2021, and #52 QB and #819 overall recruit in 2022. And though a long way to go, they are reportedly in good shape for #13/#220 QB in 2023 class.
To bring it back to the Illini, statistically DeVito’s good year is on par with Peters’ good year with Illini. If he can achieve that, Illini will be competitive and fighting to go to a bowl game in 2022.
Hello Illini fans. Congrats on landing Tommy Devito. It just didn’t work out with us. One word of advice, watch out for Tommy’s dad posting on your board. He is toxic and blames everyone else for Tommy’s failures. He throws teammates under the bus as well as the coaches. He was banned from our board twice.
I wish nothing but the best for Tommy, but he has his limitations. The fact that I’m reading here that you are rebuilding your offensive line and have a lack of talent at receiver, is nit good for his outcome. We had the same exact issues and Tommy was not effective.

I probably know the least about football recruiting of anyone on this board. However, I recall how well we did with Jason Verduzco after Jeff George departed. The guy was only 5"9" but ran our offense well for a very successful 1990 season (and a meh 1991 one.) The difference v. our current situation (IIRC) is that in '90 we had a line that protected him and a strong stable of backs and receivers (including Howard Griffith's final season in '90 and receivers like Shawn Wax) that kept our offense humming. He was a tough, resilient QB. Perhaps I'm wrong but we don't need Heisman talent in the pocket; we need protection, a competent arm, receivers who can catch, and a running threat.
