uhhh what?
I don't know anything, sorry if i misspoke. just with the portal and if were
looking to add a potential starter/slash competition, things could look dim
for folks down on the depth chart. i would love for a couple of these young
kids to step but i know how college football is today.

Gotcha. They like Leary and have explained to him that he is gonna need time to develop. Same with Cal

Some have a little to much spare time if we are picking on things like this. It is a picture....no clue if pre-game and just caught the ball, etc. A 2025 prospect that has no interest from other schools, hmm same thing happened with a kid named Cal Swanson. People were ripping him and than all of a sudden he jumped up to a 3 star and kept jumping up the QB rankings. He looks like a big kid from the videos...wonder if done growing.
Grayson Wilson QB 6'3 190 Central Arkansas Christian interest from Baylor, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. Offers from Illinois and Central Arkansas as a Freshman. #2 Overall prospect and #1 Dual Threat QB in C/O 2025 in Arkansas. Coach Lunney has relationships in Arkansas. Trust Coach Lunney.

yea
unless you are a 5* (or even super high 4*) rated kid out of high school, there just arent many P5 programs you will start at in year 1, and maybe not many you will start at in Year 2. Players like Leary need to spend Frosh year likely as a redshirt and preserve that year of eligibility. Show your value to the program in practice and in the quarterback room, and among your age peers in the locker room.

Yeah I remember the talk of Brandon Peters being a QB that will turn the program around.
Peters was WAY worse when he played for Michigan than McNamara was.

When I went back and watched a bit of film I didn't think it was quite as bad as the reputation, but the reputation was that he was this catastrophic bust of a recruit (he wasn't just any 4 star, he was a top 35 player in the nation with NFL attention and ticketed to be THE guy for Harbaugh, a "next Andrew Luck" back when that was a thing).

McNamara just got recruited over, he played fine.

In the new world of the portal being able to make these distinctions is every bit as important as scouting high school players well.

(Also, btw, your narrative isn't right, people were very, very skeptical of Peters when he transferred here, especially with Rod Smith's offense. People thought he was a placeholder for IW at most, he exceeded the median message board expectation in the end.)

Yeah. I hate Michigan as much as anyone. But McNamara is left nut worthy (I'm a righty).

Put it this way.

1. McNamara 2. DeVito 3. Peters 4. Sitkowski is an absolutely crystal clear, not plausibly arguable tier structure of those 4 as incoming transfers to Illinois.

Wes Lunt is probably ahead of DeVito but that's trickier. And that was the stone age transfer-wise anyway.

Any time I go back and look at Wes Lunt, I am always stunned how many games he started for us. 2014 I always just consider a Reilly O'Toole year, which obviously isn't really correct. 2016 I can only think of Crouch and George. And I must have just blacked out during 2015. His numbers don't look that bad, but I just cannot for the life of me remember what he looked like as our QB. Ooof what a weird time to be an Illinois fan.

We all thought Wes got jobbed at oSu and was going to do for us for 3 years what he did there until he got hurt
Sadly, circumstances being what they were, he had no time to throw and he was as immobile as Mike Glennon .
It just didnt work out here as we all hoped it would for the in-state lad

yup. 2 years is likely the new norm as all you get The days of a 4 year starter ala Scheelhouse are over.
now , its like an annual game of musical chairs for quarterbacks. 100 guys chasing after 30 starting jobs at the more highly ranked schools.
Im not afraid of the future of the sport , I am just a lot more comfortable with how it has been done for most of the last 40 years
To be fair, a 4 year starter was rare. I can only think of Kittner and Scheelhouse. And our best QB, George, was as transfer.

In my view, the “old” model was develop for 2 years and then start for 2 years.
