To be fair, a 4 year starter was rare. I can only think of Kittner and Scheelhouse. And our best QB, George, was as transfer.

In my view, the “old” model was develop for 2 years and then start for 2 years.
yes, I didnt imply 4 year starters were ever the norm for anyone. cuz they werent . they were fairly rare
but the likelihood we see any, anywhere anymore, is real real rare
you may never see a QB even on the roster for 4 years anymore

We all thought Wes got jobbed at oSu and was going to do for us for 3 years what he did there
Lunt did exactly for 3 years here what he did there: flash genuine NFL arm talent, put the ball in harm's way too much, be the slowest player in college football and not unrelatedly get himself injured about every four games.

Sure, Lunt was really slow and injured all the time, but he threw just 12 INTs (and 36 TDs) in 954 attempts for Illinois. (DeVito for his career has thrown 14 INTs in 736 attempts.) My memory is that Lunt rarely threw over the middle and excelled at placing it where only the receiver could catch it. Perhaps Lunt fumbled a lot.

Lunt lit up non-conference teams. His stats looked amazing but had a lot of monster games against some so-so teams.

Big Ten opponents 13 TDs 6 INTs

Non-conference 23 TDs 6 INTs

How often was the 4 year starter happening and how much did anyone want that to start with? Most college QBs are only going to get a year or two to start anyway if the program they are coming in to is established. If you have a 4 year starter that means you are probably a lower tier school that hit the jackpot with a highly ranked guy, your program is in taters and have no other options, or you got a generational type talent. If not those freshman were going to be sitting behind the upperclassmen anyway.

The biggest difference between now and then is that before, if a guy got passed up on the depth chart or there were 2 QBs in a class and they were #2, that guy was just going to ride the bench his whole career and never see the field. Now they have options to actually go somewhere else and get playing time.
The question is, do you want to play for a school like Alabama or OSU and not get a chance to start or go to an average/good Power 5 school where your chance of starting 4 years is higher. Me, I would rather play a role all 4 years than to sit for a year or two.

Transfer liberalization allows a player to do both. Commit to the big program out of HS, spend a year or two there, burn a year of eligibility at most, see if you have a direct and immediate route to the starting job there, and if not transfer to somewhere where you will.

As your economics textbook would tell you, this is going to in aggregate improve the options and overall level of QB play for everyone.

Louis Margaglione is a part of the leadership for the Illini Guardians, which is the NIL collective created to help Illinois Fighting Illini athletes obtain name, image and likeness money.

Margaglione joined Illinois football head coach Bret Bielema on Wednesday's "Bret Bielema Show," and it led to Bielema discussing how he uses NIL money to help in recruiting football players.

"The way the recruiting world works, anytime I'm talking to a recruit — so a recruit I'm talking to in wherever, Chicago; Miami; Columbus, Ohio; wherever at — you can't talk to them about the money they're going to get, but you can talk to them about the players' money that are on our roster right now are currently getting. I would say in the last month we've awarded over, almost $200,000 in NIL money that has gone to guys on our team, and that's continued to grow every day."

Former 5* Logan Brown, OL from Wisconsin dismissed(and entered the transfer portal) after striking a teammate in practice. Is this a guy we go after???? I mean, he already likes hitting Wisconsin players.
Pass. He was struggling to get on the field.
