Werner laid out the challenge of the waiver process for DeVito. Even if Tommy wants to come back (not certain) and Illinois submits a compelling case for DeVito to be granted another year, it's going to take substantial time before they make a decision. You effectively have to wait that process out. It creates a muddled message when recruiting transfer QBs. Folks like Armstrong, Leary, Card, etc. aren't going to come to Illinois with the possibility of DeVito being granted another year. Illinois would have to feel really good (or really bad?) about the petition process to move forward with that being the plan. You also have to have a coherent plan between bringing DeVito back and also recruiting a new QB. The positive is Illinois probably wants to bring in a transfer QB even if TDV comes back but it's a very different type of player.

there are now 3 pro leagues in the US and 1 in Canada . there are opportunities other than the NFL
Strange, I don’t see the NFL mentioned in my post, which was intentional. Do the other leagues not have drafts? Regardless, I really don’t think another year in college will help his PRO prospects.

The NCAA needs to start regulating the transfer portal process like yesterday. It is the wild west out there. Seeing guys like Leary and Slovis who were starters for top 25 caliber teams in there is crazy.

Coaches can change schools anytime they want. Non-athlete students can change schools anytime they want. Faculty can change schools anytime they want. Why should athletes be the only ones forced to stay? Because some fans might be upset? That’s pretty darn ridiculous. The NCAA has proven they can’t be trusted. The last thing they deserve is more power.

🤣 lol at thinking the NCAA has ever had good pure intentions. As other posters have pointed out, so many of these overpaid coaches are able to move at the drop of a hat and even if they get rightfully fired for being a terrible coach, they still get laughably huge buyouts.

I'm not saying all of the higher ups in the NCAA are evil but come on now, college football is a multi billionaire dollar business.

Leary has another bro at ND?
I'm sure there are many factors that could play a part in the decision, and maybe there is a reason he chooses us over them. But "my brother could be my backup" is likely going to be outweighed by "they are freaking Notre Dame." I mean, Dallan Hayden is not on our roster right now...
