The WR/TE group is much better than going into the 2022 season.

Hightower
Bryant
Washington
Williams
Beatty
Reiman

Would love to find a guy to stretch the field but it's not likely to be a star. Might have to find an FCS/G5 star who wants a bigger stage.
Which young TEs are ready to step up into LF and MM roles after they move on?

I understand the offense under Bielema is not going to be as wide open as that '21 Virginia offense. DeVito was a revelation this year; best Illinois QB in 10 years. Armstrong could put up half of his 2019 stats and match DeVito's '22 season. His ceiling is very high.

1. Armstrong
2. Card (still over the moon with this option)
3. Future unknown transfer QB

What about Miller? He was highly rated. I think he will be in the mix.

Card would be a very good pickup. Another name I hope the staff looks at is Mikey Keene from UCF. If he enters the portal, I think he would be a great fit in Lunney's offense. Maybe a little short, but he has Devito-level accuracy which would be really nice to see again next year.

Another year in Lunney's system add in Miller and we have at least an average room. A good qb can certainly work with that and if we get the right qb we get a better shot at a difference making transfer.

Does this imply that Elzy is not coming here??

As far as UVA's Armstrong goes, go and watch the first 15 seconds of their game against PITT, which I was at, and see if that performance doesn't change your mind.

This is not an endorsement but random thought about this young man. QB Malik Hornsby was at Arkansas and highly touted recruit coming out of high school in Texas. Quick and athletic but raw and inexperienced. I know Illinois offered him but not a serious shot of landing him during the Lovie tenure. BB would have been gone from Arkansas but they offered him in early 2018. Hornsby was likely a prospect BB and Lunney had on the chart while at Arkansas. BB got fired late November of 2017 and Arkansas was one of the top 5 schools to offer early in 2018. Lunney would have been around that process longer than BB. Figure he would be down the list but at least a few ties to him already.

It will be interesting to see how many QBs come on the market....bunch already. Marketing has already started before the portal is open

Isn't there a Gabbert (little brother) from Miami of Ohio looking around for a new home? 23 yr old Gabbert, in 4
years as a starter, (still 2 years of eligibility remaining) has apparently has quite good passing numbers. might be
a good fit with his completion percentage. So i put him right there with Armstrong and Card. Three nice options,
but probably a lot of high power 5 teams after Card. Iowa was interested. Missouri and Kentucky as well. (kinda
nice to say that about us too huh?) Big brother starred at Missouri.

A note on Gabbert:
6,259 passing yards in 30 career games with the RedHawks, enough to place him sixth all-time among Miami
quarterbacks. His total of 45 career touchdowns is also sixth all-time for Miami. He only threw 14 interceptions in
his RedHawk career.

Agreed. This will be the most interesting off-season that I can recall. In the past I’ve been excited about the off-season mostly out of of blind optimism and fan desperation. Now it feels like the staff can take a more measured approach, and I’m interested to see what decisions they make.

College football is peculiar. More than any other sport, success breeds more success and failure breeds ever more failure. The best players go to the best schools. The best schools get additional bowl practices. Great players want to go to the great programs, bowls want to invite the best programs with the best players. The best coaches get offered from the the best programs, and bring in more great players. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. It’s rare to see a program flip the script like this staff is doing right now. Absolutely fascinating to see it happen in real time.

Cade may not have much to throw to in IC.

I saw someone mention that DeVito might be able to get a red shirt year. Is this true and if so how soon would we know?

Secondly what is the story/scoop with the QB from Texas who signed after quitting his baseball career.. Thanks

We need a Willie Gault type receiver but one that can catch the ball... Any chance the track team has a spare sprinter available?

They’ll get some in the portal for sure. Some will want to play with Cade
You may be right but there are so many examples of Iowa receivers leaving and finding success elsewhere. Brian Ferentz will be a hard sell for WRs (unless dad takes away his playcalling duties…or his paycheck)

DeVito had the better QBR but Pyne had the better QB Rating (sounds confusing but different statistics). Pyne is likely going to get serious looks from top programs. Pyne does have some stinky performances (Clemson and Syracuse back-to-back weeks were bad) but also some great ones (USC, BYU). Would put him on my list ahead of Card because he's more proven.

These type of QB transfers could be interesting to the staff depending on (a) if they bring in a one-year starter like Armstrong and/or (b) does Art come back. A one-year start and Art moving on could lead to the staff bringing in a guy like Hornsby with the hopes he can win the backup job in 2023 camp and then have a chance to win the job in 2024 camp. Could be a worthwhile risk for the right staff (coaches on the hot seat) or right situation (hypothetical above) because they either were well-regarded preps behind established starters (Hornsby) or injuries have limited their opportunities. I don't consider Card in this group because he's played enough at Texas to show he is successful, just not successful enough to unseat Ewers.
