It's whatever, but must have been quite the bag to lure him to Auburn at the start of a rebuild and a coach who could be dismissed halfway through the season for yet another scandal.

There are no rebuilds in college football anymore, especially not in the SEC. Not in the way that term is understood.

Need to have the money before you can dish the money. Our boosters are nowhere close to the level of SEC boosters, from what I hear.
This is just a matter of changing the culture here, pure and simple. Illinois has over 470,000 living alumni (800,000 for the entire system) vs. only 240,000 for Auburn. The state of Illinois has almost EIGHT MILLION more people than Alabama - a state that Auburn splits for fans with the ever-more popular Crimson Tide, whereas we are the sole state school. Even if you take out Cook, DuPage, Lake AND Will Counties (which you shouldn't, as there are tons of Illini graduates/fans in all of these places...), Illinois is clearly bigger than Alabama. Additionally, by every predictor of income out there, it would seem Illinois' alumni base is likely better off financially ... while this is not strictly related to sports, an example might be Illinois' endowment of nearly $4 billion vs. Auburn's $1 billion.

We just simply have to start stringing together enough winning seasons that financially able donors/alumni/fans care enough about Illini Football that they will gladly spend their dime on this type of stuff. It's hard to imagine because it's never been, but that's actually a pretty short-sighted argument ... the potential is there.

NIL gets worse unless there's somehow a CBA, which means CFB would arguably need even more "tiers."

It might be on a conference basis, which is one benefit to super conferences.

A super conferencd with 20 teams ith the same NIL limits is basically a minor league.

Auburn kept recruiting him. And they paid him a lot more than he was gonna get from us, NIL! This is gonna hurt him though we have the best development and offensive lineman in the top 5 to 10 in the country.

Didn't Bret and A Henry put in the time and effort to visit him after his graduation? I'd be po'd too.

Schools have been upping their offers to steal committed players since the beginning of college football. It just has a name now. You can't talk about being a big time program only when it's convenient.

Not a significant loss since we never really had it on paper. I'm just glad Pearl decided to come back. We are still going to be good even if Adams makes the move to center and we get another tackle. Just not as deep maybe.

You just can’t get into a bidding war just to keep a player that is easily replaceable, sometimes you just have to move on.

I think the way the NIL was constituted was really bad. The reason we should pay these student-atheletes, as the claim went, was that the NCAA/Universities were making money off the kids. Which is true.

Why then has the NCAA/Universities asked alums to pay for the NIL?

The money should come from the monies made from various sources by the NCAA/Universities. Set aside a pot that all schools contribute into and then disburse from that pot. Or, something like that.

Agree about the bidding war. I wonder how much they shelled out to keep some of the players we have kept? Not much said about that but you gotta wonder. Many on here have stated that they thought I.W. might be headed to Purdue. That wound up not being the case. I am sure he loves this university but a kid like that could make some money now.

I mean thst's what scholarships are meant to be in an ideal world, but those are limitated by a lot of strict rules that don't really matter because most NIL bags arent for walkons.

I think it comes down to getting massive TV deals and making your conference into the closest thing to a "league" you can and not worry about bowl tie ins or some national championship game.

I mean the SEC is the strongest CFB conference and I'm not commenting on that, but they can pretty much guarantee teams in the playoff hunt every single season because they refuse to play more than 8 conference games and put some bottomfeeder teams in the waste bin.

At this point the way it is trending, I think it is more about the brand your conference has how many eyes it reaches.

The B1G is obviously way ahead of the curve on that, even compared to the SEC.

Freeze isnt going anywhere
NCAA has ZERO power anymore. The most they will do if Auburn is guilty of anything will be to punish the nearest G5 school just to make a point.
In this case, Troy or UAB.

Well this certainly stirs up lots of negative thoughts I’ve had since the beginning of all this NIL. How do you blame the kids for taking the cash? I don’t. This is the future. It’s a mercenary’s game now. I’m NOT saying they are, but if Newton and Randolph aren’t hearing money thrown their way I’d be shocked. Hope we can hold onto them.

We have to figure out a way to dish out more NIL money. It looks like we can't compete with these other schools when it comes to this. I've been hearing rumors we don't have a ton of NIL money to dish out for football. I don't know if that's true or not, but if it is, we have to figure something out or we will get crushed in the transfer portal football wise.
I notice you keep saying "we"

fwliw, its still "illegal" to contact a player on another roster is they are not officially in the portal
that might dissuade some schools not named Notre Dame
We all know how that game works right? You contact his HS coach or others that might know to see if the player in question has any interest. I can't imagine there's a school out there that doesn't do this, including Illinois.
