its strange how the game has changed. when offenses were centered on runs, the MLB was the most important defensive position.

Now with passing being dominant, we only have two linebackers, and they are way down the list of importance on D. Things change

He is an IOL and will compete for a spot and wouldn't surprise me if he cracks the 2 deep. If he reps well at center then Kruetz may be in trouble.
It seems like you’ve never been a fan of Jo. Kreutz. I didn’t think he was great this year, but he definitely wasn’t the problem of the OL. He and Luke weren’t always in sync with snaps , but it wasn’t catastrophic. He still has two years to play too.

In my opinion, Kreutz doesn't fit the OL scheme and limits the way we can play upfront (i.e. reliant on our guards to help inside). There's a reason why we prioritized Avery Jones out of the portal. He can always improve, but his ceiling is capped by his size and athleticism.

We're going to have to pull a Colorado and get into that top 35 via the JUCO/Portal route(not to that extent obviously) to be competitive next year. Don't think that I'm breaking any news here. Again, immediate, guaranteed playing time has to be a lure.
Portal has changed FB recruiting a lot like it has changed BB recruiting, IMO
Reminds me a lot of pro baseball free agency

Hope we can get a nice OL one way or the other for Kaden to run behind, then we have the kind of offense I think BB likes to run the most. No portal and we don't have much of a shot at improving the OL

Pretty soon we'll start hearing how it was Kreutz's fault the OT's had the ole blocking scheme down pat early in the season. How all year long on 4th and 1 a run over a tackle got stuffed every.single.time. Do we have 1 semi-prove tackle for next year?

I have no problem with him. He’s just undersized for a B1G center.
would he be serviceable or better enough at another spot on the line if he gets bumped?

also, unrelated but i'd love to hear peoples thoughts on Dylan Rosiek's play. i thought he looked a bit lost and slow at the beginning of the year but was making a lot of plays as the season wore on. of course, the defense was basically a sieve so i don't actually know how to judge his performance but would love it if he's good enough to build with over the next couple of years

Highly unlikely. That said, the biggest boost will likely occur from this year's reps/experience. There were a ton of incoming freshman, transfers that hadn't played, plus a new coordinator, new position coach, etc.

Just to give perspective:

Returning P5 career snaps for the secondary going into the 2023 season: 1,163 (Nicholson was 592 of those snaps).

Returning career snaps for the secondary going into the 2024 season: 4,155 (Nicholson almost has as many career snaps as the 2023 team had going into the season).

Assuming Nicholson, Scott, and Scott come back next year, Illinois will have three secondary starters with 800+ career snaps. If Strain comes back, he has over 600 career snaps. You also have Bailey and Hill coming back. Tobe really impressed as a true freshman. Connelly talks about his returning production value is more weighted towards returning secondary production. There are reasons to be optimistic the secondary will take a step forward next year. There are also concerns, with the poor play down the stretch and Law Firm going to the pros. We'll tackle those worries once we see who's coming back (Jacas? Coleman? transfer portal?).
Ya, but they all suck! You can have a ton of snaps and built up experience and still give up 30 pts per game. They are mediocre players.

I think he’d be in the 2 deep if he gets bumped but don’t think he’d start anywhere in the interior. He’s a gamer he just struggles against the bull rush type DTs.

Dylan was fine at ILB
