I don't mind him on special teams at all. Also thought it was more for insurance in case IW does stay in the Draft. Slot option with Silas Bolden and Mario Sanders sounds much better than just Sanders.
Have we passed the “point of no return” for a final year in Champaign?

Great update article. Spoke to a close friend who lost his job as a college football head coach recently. He specifically told me, wished he had hit and leaned on transfer portal sooner. He was focused on high school graduates and it cost him.
I don't like it, but is is major college football now.
Alabama had 9 men hit portal yesterday, studs. I would put out offers to 6 of them, all positions of need. 😆 🤣

Nine Alabama players entered the portal on Wednesday:
College Football Program Loses Nine Players to Transfer Portal in 15 Minutes
"The full list includes:
  • Eli Holstein, QB
  • Malik Benson, WR
  • Shazz Preston, WR
  • Miles Kitselman, TE
  • Seth McLaughlin, OL
  • Terrence Ferguson, OL
  • Monkell Goodwine, DL
  • Earl Little, DB
  • Kristian Story, DB"

I'm guessing there is no connection to any of these names but Earl Little would be the most intriguing. He's getting playing time at Bama, just hampered by injuries.

I could be wrong but I think the staff is done adding more offensive line. Need a tight end, at least one secondary piece, probably want another defensive lineman, and then you take big swings for high-talent skill players if one is interested.

an o-lineman from that list would be perfect
I think we are fine with our OL right now. The 2 transfers Illinois got are pretty highly ranked. Davis is ranked #5 among OT in the portal and Wigenton is ranked #24 among IOL in the portal. They need a TE,DT and a CB yet.

I'm not doubting Altmyer or knocking any of the QB's on the roster but I am a little surprised we aren't adding a QB with game experience.

1) If you add another QB, you're running the risk of losing Leary
2) You have to find a peak situation of a John Paddock - who has game experience who doesn't really threaten for the top job? Those are incredibly hard to find.
3) If you add another QB that could threaten for the top job (is there anyone even out there that would qualify?), then you are running the risk of losing Altmyer

The QB room is fine. Altmyer did pretty well as a sophomore. Leary should be ready to come in and produce as the back-up. You are bringing in the top QB prospect in a long time. There are still other developmental arms on the roster that might be able to step in (for a limited basis). You can even squint and see an even higher-rated '25 QB prospect that looks likely to be a commit. This is the best the QB room has looked in 10+ years, probably longer.

Probably looking for a qb willing to walk on like Ryan Johnson qb3 in the past. FCS level game experience but wanting to experience BiG.?
Unless staff thinks there is enough depth now with Swanson/michaux/ petty and they would likely play ahead of a walk on FCS qb

I agree with your logic.....also need a solid QB2 at all times

We haven't used one quarterback in a season for a very, very, very long time. JMO but if guys feel threatened by competition than they are welcome to transfer out of the program. Illinois needs to have a 2nd QB they fill comfortable with whether due to injury/performance of QB1 at all times. If the staff feels there isn't much of a drop off from Altmyer to Leary than I am fine with that. If not, than they need to grab someone.

Seems like our QB room needs a few blowouts this coming season, which will help get the depth some experience in 2Hs.

Surprised staff is that determined to keep Leary. Assuming we get Altmyer as a RS Senior, he will be competing with Trey Petty for the starting job in 2025?

I do think our QB room is heavily improved. But it hasn't been a strong position for Bielema historically...

Definitely think we are trending in the right direction with Lunney.
