Sadly it feels like we are finding out having world class training is not as important as world class NIL. I could be wrong but that’s what I’m putting most of the blame on for our misses. I agree with posters that have said this Missouri series could not have returned at a worse time. Clearly our path is thru developing young guys. We will never buy our way to the top.
There definitely seems to be a nil advantage.I know there state set up a beneficial nil law passed but I thought that was based more on high school talent but I could be wrong about that for sure.idk if there coaching staff is on
a rip or more nil but it's definitely got to be a big part of it

We as illini fans have to find a better way to help with nil or something.Insiders is there anything a average fan i mean not extremely wealthy can do to help with nil?

Yep, that staff can really recruit and they've lined up NIL opportunities as well as anyone. Need to get out of that upcoming series ASAP
Why does Mizzou have so much more NIL than us?

It's a joke that we can afford top notch facilities with our "Big 2" money, but we can hardly afford a P5 transfer

If I am correct, Missouri can start paying kids once they commit, even in high school. Or so I have heard.

#184
my bad.. only if they stay in state.

This new Missouri law allows in-state high school students, once they sign their NLI, to begin making money in high-school, but ONLY if they commit to an in-state school. This effectively gives Mizzou a huge advantage to all in-state talent over smaller schools and all outside courters to blue chips.

Feel free to donate.

I've donated in the past, and from what I remember, you can't specify which sport you'd like your donation to go to, correct?

I could be wrong, but just based on what I've read on this board, it's not so much an issue with not having plenty of NIL funds, it's just that Illinois NIL is primarily allocated to basketball, and not as much to football. Mizzou just does the opposite, hence them seeming to have more money for football than us. But we also thoroughly outperform them with regards to basketball NIL.

So unless there is a way for a "regular' fan to donate specifically to football, all we can do is donate generally and hope "a rising tide lifts all ships." Do I have that right?

I think there's a valid question in there that, if you are the AD, do you try to message to your top donors that there may be more value to direct funds to NIL vs. facilities, etc. Assuming the product on the field is successful (read: more talent -> more wins), then that opens doors to other financial benefit

At this point, Mizzou has a top 5 '24 class in basketball so I'm sure they are spending plenty on bball NIL

They have 5 commits, which is why their ranking is so high. It's not like they're stacking 5 stars the way they are in football. I'd rather Brad continue to focus on fit and guys with experience and forget about the rankings. We're kind of forced to do it in football because it's harder to get blue chip guys, but still not impossible to create a winning team out of it. Just for reference, 247 had the following transfer rankings for our basketball transfers:

Domask - 84
Guerrier - 121
Harmon - 127

Just shows how inaccurate rankings can be.

Eh, depending on the site, it's 5 top 100 recruits, several in the top 50. That's a haul for any class. You don't get there without spending big NIL these days
Yeah, fair. It's the SEC though, they pretty much have to play that game or be left in the dust

That's a fair point. But I do feel like we have generally outperformed them in recruiting if you factor in transfers. Even if some of our recruits/transfers in the NIL era have not panned out, it still takes a lot of money to get the big names here.

spending NIL money on high school kids is crap shoot. in basketball, if they dont play now they're out the door for another pay
day somewhere else. our money was spent on returned kids and upperclassmen who have proved they can play at that level.
this is a important distinction. its my understanding that so far, football has payed the return starter, going to have to change
that.

You can designate a specific sport or even a specific athlete if your donation exceeds $15k/year.
