Good question. Seems like an odd strategy to use a spot for a backup TE vs depth at one of the most important positions on the field and one where we have minimal quality
Definitely agreed….if Goda is on scholarship, I believe we only have 1 scholarship left.I like adding Goda but it would be a bad decision if we don’t add at DT. This wave of the transfer portal has been successful. It would be even better if we can Franklin and a DT.

Here is the list of 5/31 + 6/7 visitors (included commits as a measuring stick):
Player Ranking Offers P4 Offers Competing Visits Notes DE Nathaniel Marshall #34 25 24 Michigan, Alabama, Miami Michigan commit. Has Illinois connections. Elite visits, elite prospect. NIL. CB Donovan Starr #469 31 20 North Carolina, Missouri, Clemson, Auburn Elite visit list, very strong offer list. CB Charles Bass #308 23 20 Arkansas East St. Louis kid. #7 ranked in-state recruit. Priority and litmus test. Very strong offer list. QB Carson Boyd #661 11 8 None - ILLINOIS COMMITMENT Helium to his prospect ranking. Top QB priority for staff. Committed in January. WR Carl Jenkins Jr. #528 30 17 Louisville, Kansas, UCF, USF Lots of offers, visits could mean desire to stay closer to home? Might actually be visiting on 6/15. S Andre Lovett #730 16 10 Arizona State - ILLINOIS COMMITMENT Priority for staff, committed in March. visiting Arizona St this weekend. RB John Forster
#323 18 13 Wisconsin, West Virginia, Rutgers NJ recruit, solid offer list. DE Tyrone Burrus Jr. #469 16 9 Indiana, Michigan State, Louisville Illinois will be his first official visit 5/31. WR Terry Shelton #631 13 7 Arizona, TCU, Kansas One of his few offers outside of the Southwest. DE Cameron Brooks #1100 9 5 Kansas, Kansas State Chicago recruit, crystal ball for Illinois. UI with first visit. OL Griffin Rousseau #866 3 2 None - ILLINOIS COMMITMENT Connected to Illinois early on, committed in January. DL Isaiah White #1057 9 6 Washington, Louisville, Boston College Eclectic visit list. Illinois just offered seven weeks ago.
This is a really good list of official visitors and associated offers. Rousseau is the only one that sticks out but it's justifiable because of how early the staff was in on him. Ignore that Marshall has less offers than Starr - he could commit to every p4 program and it would be accepted.
Donovan Darden now added. Edge from North Carolina. Really raw athlete - would likely need one year minimum, possibly two before he has enough weight in B1G line play.
7 FBS offers
4 P4 offers
Other visits with South Carolina & Pittsburgh
Using Darden as an example - I have some concern when all of the in-state power conference schools aren't involved. He has no interest from Duke, Wake Forest, or North Carolina. He has interest from NC State, but no offer. Maybe it's well known he wants to leave home. Maybe he just blew up at a satellite camp and that's why Missouri and Illinois already love what they saw but that hasn't trickled in back home. Could be a lot of reasons, but there are also concerns about the lack of local interest.
I don't mind a TE add, there's logic that another pass catcher is needed, but the math is making it hard to believe all of the bigger needs (DL, OL, or WR difference maker) are going to be filled this offseason.
Also, Griffin Moore didn't land anywhere? He's the type of guy that a MAC school should be begging to get. He could get 25-30 catches for them. Maybe he's just ready to move on with his life.

He needs to finish a summer class that likely just started to graduate before he goes anywhere. I'm not sure why you are reading into this perceived "silence." Silence is expected until he is eligible to go anywhere. The fact that things are so quiet...And I mean SO QUIET...
about the Franklin recruitment just creates a feeling of mysteriousness filled with oddness and peculiarity.
There's pretty much no noise about where things stand currently - not on here, not on national media, not on Illinois media...
Hope we still got a decent shot...
It could theoretically play in Illinois favor. Other teams may want the full roster on campus next week. Would need a connection to ZF to better understand character, if he could join later in offseason and still make an impact. Guessing he will not announce until confirmed he can transfer, in case of the unexpected. He needs to finish a summer class that likely just started to graduate before he goes anywhere. Maybe, but I think it might be too early. Perhaps an assistant to a position coach????
Maybe he doesn’t fit their schemes or they are full at those positions. Their are several in state kids who haven’t offered that have multiple power 4 offers from better football programs.
Jovan Clark, Terrance smith, jahmare Washington, Donovan Robinson. Mason Ellen’s are just a few that fit they example
Didn’t see it posted but Anthony James committed to EWU. Wonder if we are done at dt
I'm a "follow the offers" guy and found it odd that Illinois was the only top program interested in him. His landing spot seems to confirm that UW, and likely James, found out he wasn't in the same class as his designated star rating.
In the world of the transfer portal and NIL, you can't stop recruit specific positions in May because you think you're full next year.
Not a single State of North Carolina program has offered him and only one has recruited him. Not even the strong G5 programs like App State or East Carolina are listed. State of Illinois is very different beast than most states. There is only one P4 public school. Northwestern has a very different set of criteria for admission/sports than 95% of other P4, possibly the only school that has those specific recruiting parameters. This means the only school passing on specific players is Illinois. It's not a fair comparison to view the same standard of one B1G team forgoing an offer to a recruit as four ACC teams doing the same. I wouldn't have the same concern if Minnesota passed on a kid (they've made a mess of Wisconsin pillaging players from their state that Fleck or previous staffs weren't interested).
But yes, this could all be for nothing and he might become an all-B1G edge rusher as an upperclassmen. The most obvious answer could be that he's made it known he wants to leave home (ABNC?).
It's OK Luther head said he's got someone on scholarship if need be jkDefinitely agreed….if Goda is on scholarship, I believe we only have 1 scholarship left.
And there offensive coordinators.but would also offer there offensive line and tight ends seriously especially if they offer for tight endsEveryone cries about Iowa coming in and taking a bunch of Illinois kids. A lot of their commits we never offered. Iowa does a great job identifying defensive talent. Any recruit they are offering I would offer. Just stay away from their quarterbacks.
