one would think that if the NIL income by the player is taxable, it would be deductible by the "donor". but this is not a hard and fast rule

I think in a one-on-one marketing agreement, it would be. If a player gets paid for making a commercial for the local Ford dealer, then the player should pay tax and the dealer should get a deduction for marketing expense.

Donations to collectives from individuals, with pooled and shared money, that may be a different animal.

yes

but NIL money , no matter what the arrangement , is taxable to the player

the only issue for debate is if the payor gets a deduction as a business expense or donation

Also, we keep complaining about not being able to compete in this new system. Guess what? We weren't competing in the other system either. Our lane is building teams by finding system guys that may not be the best, but are good at what we need them to do. We are going to have to do twice the work for half the results, but unless Urban Meyer or some other top tier coach takes pity on us and uses us as a personal pet project, we are where we will be and generally always have been.

Success at Illinois is a winning season.
The painful truth.

"Illinois was going places, but then NIL came and messed it all up."

We had an 8-5 season with the best talent we've had in years after a hot start, bookended by 5-7 seasons. If you thought 8-5 was the new standard, I have an MLM opportunity with your name on it.
Around the end of the season, I looked up our records going back to the late 80s. In 40 years, we've only had back to back winning seasons twice. Once in the Zook era, and once with Simeon Rice, if I remember correctly. I didn't say good seasons, just better than .500 seasons.

We have never in my lifetime been able to recruit and have a good coach at the same time. Zook was the best recruiter, but couldn't coach. Turner had a great offense but had no interest in recruiting. Because we've never been able to bring in the talent consistently, what we've seen is you can get a group of 3 star guys with a few 4 stars sprinkled in, and once they've been in the program for 3 or 4 years, we've been able to have some good years. Then that group graduates, and we're back to 5-7 or worse.

We have never been able to land the top instate talent. We almost never bring in a top 25 class. You just can't succeed, unless you have a genius coach, with the level of talent we get. Bringing in 4 more very strong programs to the conference. I don't like the outlook for the football program.

I’m just fine with a .500 average and maybe a bowl every other year. That’s not to say better isn’t preferred but after the last 40 years, .500 sounds like progress to me. I‘ll settle for competitively entertaining w/o blowouts.

Honestly, I think we have the right situation at coach and his game plan. The university is doing everything they can to keep fan interest high and engaged. We have to do more with less and Bret is doing everything he can and I think he enjoys the grind a bit more than some.

They are all moving out of this state. The richest man in Illinois recently moved to Florida with his billions of dollars in tow!

Here’s a player I would like to see offered. Kid is a good player and his dad is also the Fenwick AD. He also has a younger brother that’s a player
Sign him and get him to convince Marshall to flip and sign with us too.

Not sure Tommy has that kinda pull lol but that’s the type of player we need to land. His younger brother was on the 2027 meanstreets team last summer. He broke his ankle this year in football so I’m not sure if he’s back yet. They are tough kids who are good players .

The Dennis Effect. The kids a poster child of NIL and the transfer portal. That picture should be on every discussion.
Are you sure that Dennis is because of NIL and not because he was homesick? Sure MSU can offer more NIL but I don't think that was the prevailing factor here

Michigan is practically a border state. That's pretty weak if you move because of homesick. Does he plan to see his folks every weekend?
