A superstar that takes Illini from very good to "Can play with anybody"
IMO that's what we need to be a National Champ contender next year. A WR, RB, or KR/PR that is a threat to house it every time he touches the ball.

Those are nice thoughts, keep it up. we're a far piece for there, but thanks for the good thoughts!
Could we have a IU 2024 year and sneak into the tournament, maybe. Will we be contender, not
so sure. Gonna need another 20-30 mil in NIL$, and that pales in comparison with OSU's $200 mil.

Nothing to take away from these guys, they were all excellent and deserve their place on the mantle of Illinois football legends. My qualm is while each of these guys was awesome, their teams excelled because the surrounding talent was sufficient to compete for a conference title. The 1989 Illinois team had (a) Jeff George AND (b) the 7th best defense by points allowed. Dana Howard had a first round left tackle (Brad Hopkins) to work against every week. Thinking of a hypothetical, dropping Brandon Lloyd and Corey Luiget on the 2017 Illinois team and they still are not making a bowl, let alone raising the team's play to being able to play with anybody.

I think these lists lean too much on nostalgia and undersell the performances of recent players. What about Devon Witherspoon, Sydney Brown, Isiah Williams, Pat Bryant, Johnny Newton, and Chase Browns? Or great players during less-heralded eras like Mikel LeShoure, Whitney Mercilus, or AJ Jenkins? I think too much of history/nostalgia implies the previous list were better performances than the latter because those teams (not players) set program high-water marks in a way that was never available for someone like Mercilus.

For the current team - you can make an argument that we are going to be talking on here in the mid-2030's and realizing how fortunate it was as fans to have a Luke Altmyer, JC Davis, Kreutz, Jacas, Scott x2, Bailey, McCray, etc. all on the roster at the same time. That's the magic of having such high retention: each of those players could take a sizable step forward and become a 1st-team all-B1G player. The fun is getting the past 8 months of enjoyable college football and what might come in the next 12 months.
