It's a great vocational question. Some guys (i.e., Chuck Martin leaving ND for Miami OH) openly admit that it wasn't about finances, they just wanted to be back in the "big chair" again. I have no idea what Lunney is like or seeking, but any coordinator on the upswing is likely having discussions with their agent on how big (or small) their interest circle for upcoming jobs. A job opening like Arkansas is likely a no-doubter, but that's also why Arkansas would likely have candidates ahead of Lunney on their target list.
For all I know, Lunney may not want the headaches associated with being a HC, especially if, as others noted, the salary bump isn't significant. OC is a pretty sweet gig in the right situation. Chip Kelly took a step down and won a national title.

maybe he is
but I highly doubt he gets the nod in an emergency scenario in a game before Hampton
It might depend on how much time Altmyer would miss in the event of an injury. If he's out 1 or 2 games it's probably Hampton to save the season. If Luke misses extended time you might see what Boyd can do.

my comment was who gets the nod during an in game scenario . pretty sure Hamptons cap comes off first

Don't forget Trey Petty who has a year in the system under his belt and was also pretty highly thought of out of HS. He realistically could be the one pushing for the primary backup spot over a true freshman.

I wouldn’t be so sure about that …

Bret told me he really wants to see what Boyd has got … It will be a true competition for the backup spot …

And that’s true for nearly all backup positions … Best players play … Period …

Bret don’t care about who getting what NIL, or anybody’s feelings (see: Terrance Brooks) … The guys who give us the best chance to win will play …

Isn't Boyd a true freshman? That would make me nervous if he was QB2 and had to go into a close game
Boyd outright winning the backup job is AS good of an outcome long term for Illinois as it could get.
Should he come into a game, let him scramble, run a couple designed QB runs. Get his feet wet and let him go. I love his game as a prototypical mobile college QB. He seems like a guy who could terrorize you with his legs and really open up the passing game.

It's going to be very important for 2026 to assess the QB room this year (beyond Altmyer). It would be optimal to have 2-3 games where Boyd, Petty, etc. can get real reps to the staff can get data for the decision of adding a transfer QB to (a) be the no-doubt starter ($$$), (b) someone that can compete ($$), or (c) possibly keep Hampton or Petty as a backup ($).

I'd upgrade your very to critically. fortunately, there's ample time to assess and am confident that staff will make the right call.

that said, just because you make the right call has zero bearing on your ability to snag one of your top targets

Living near St Louis I saw alot of Boyd's highlights. He can make very athletic people look unathletic. The big knock was his height, past that he had everything you were looking for. Six foot is probably generous.

However 13 years ago, Bret had a QB a hair shorter than Boyd who lead Wisc to a Big championship, the Rose Bowl, and an 11-1 record. That QB also did quite well for the Seahawks. The one HC in America who is not that concerned about Boyd"s height resides in the Smith Center.

Welcome to the O and B Kamden. Ignore the tangent about who might be QB2 this year. Everyone's opinion means nothing, and I think it will be up to the coaches. I'm excited to have you come to Illinois.
