There was a question asked on the previous thread about whop would start at QB in 26. Hampton, Boyd, Petty, Newton and Clayton will be the 5 already here unless someone transfers or we bring someone in. I would think looking at the last 2 QB’s who transferred in might want to see the development of DeVito and Altmyer and say I want to be a part of that. It will be interesting to see who replaces LA.

I'm expecting Petty to transfer out (Sun Belt, maybe AAC) to compete for a starting job and Newton will realize he needs to change positions to maximize his professional aspirations. That would change the QB room to Hampton (SR), Boyd (rFR), and Clayton (FR).

- Let's say the staff sees Hampton as the best option to navigate a transition year, with Boyd competing with him and hoping that Boyd takes over during the season. Even in that scenario, I still think the staff brings in someone with experience.
- Let's say the staff believes Boyd can be the starter so Hampton also transfers out. Now you have two freshmen QBs and nobody else. That would make it a priority that not only Illinois brings in an experienced QB, but someone that can at least compete for the starting job.

Recruits like him is only concerned with the highest NIL. Texas Tech getting all these highly regarded recruits because of NIL. The sad thing is it won't translate to championships on the field. Bielema can wait and see once they transfer in a few years with a lower asking price.

As far as QB next year … Portal QB vs Boyd is what I expect the competition to be …

A very early name that I’ve heard could be portal bound …

Can't be understated how much I want Smith to be an Illini. This kid **more like MAN** has multiple-year anchor of the O-Line potential.

Getting guys like him in the program increase our staying power as a Top 25 team. When we beat Duke with dominant line play this weekend he'll come around.
