Why not cash it here, then?

The beauty of roster building. If you're a team that has a couple (or more) extra million to spend on roster building and expecting to contend next year then it makes sense to spend ~$250k on a great kicker. For Illinois, that might cost you a DL two-deep guy to match. Maybe it's the cost for a less-heralded starter or a well-regarded 2027 recruit. In this scenario, it makes sense for both teams.

Number I heard was over $250k.

My speculation here* but I’m sure a playoff team with a shaky kicking situation is willing to pay more to sure that up than we are.
ND needs a kicker, badly. I have no inside info, but I see some dots that if connected could see him wind up there.

I’m sorry but, paying college athletes is the biggest mistake anyone ever made. That and the transfer portal have ruined the sport for me.

I'm not going to fight you on the sentiment, because I get the frustration.

My contention is that folks are incredibly naive if you think this was not happening for many athletes before NIL. There are hundreds of stories out there now about athletes getting offered big money under the table going back decades. You need to realize that, unless you are in your 80's, you have been rooting for a system that was rotten forever.

I really do hate hate this portal era.

there will be some type of new rules on this one day . but all I have read will still allow the players first transfer to be penalty free .

rightfully so imo
also , should be allowed if head coach leaves

but beyond that , a sit out year should apply .
hard to legislate tho unless done from a vote in Congress .

It was never clean as far back as I can remember. I'm going on 70.

agree

it’s the unlimited transfer that bugs most of us , imo

and there needs to be a salary cap that is enforced & agreed to by EVERYONE thst matters . otherwise , 75% of the playoff teams will repeat all the time , with only 25% freash faces

Don’t hate the player hate the game. 20 years ago I’d have hated Olano for this as it would have been shady. Now don’t blame him one bit. Sucks but is what it is.

As good as Olano has been — and he’s been outstanding — I trust this staff to get a suitable kicker. As far as NIL and the new college sports environment, I understand it giveith and takeith away. On balance, I believe it has leveled the playing field and has greatly benefited the Illini. I think it may benefit the Illini even more in the future.

we have a solid foundation built at this point but don’t appear to be in the upper echelon of NIL. until that day comes, our top guys will be at risk of getting poached

Can't do much about kicker at this time when we have bigger problems to solve at QB + experienced backup (if Hampton leaves), RB (probably), transfer OL, DL, LB, and DBs. We'll get a replacement but we have priorities literally everywhere else

@Dan can we add a transferring out list at the beginning of each football recruiting thread?
Not a bad idea but I've already lost track of the transfer outs :), so per usual I'll only post the new transfer incoming commits in the first post during the upcoming portal window which opens up Jan. 2nd.

@Dan can we also add a thread for random transfers that have no link whatsoever to our program or our state?

Dan, you going to start a separate transfer portal thread? In’s and Outs??
All transfer portal news eventually tends to end up in this thread anyways so let's continue use this one powerful thread for all transfer portal news.

FYI as it's new month new year going to restart this and a bunch of other threads around 12pm CT (would have done it earlier but I overslept :coffee:)

Happy New Year & Go Illini! 🔸🔹
