Boo! How did MI$$OURI beat ILLINOIS for this recruit? The Illini really could've used Jaden Jones. Oh well, onward and upward. (y)

I know this because the dt from penn was a priority and he’s coming in to start. If they valued Coenen as a starter he would be here.
Unless Illinois has changed their front 3 / front 7 defensive philosophy, or your last name was Rosiek, Thompson or Jacas - you were a rotational player last year.

Coenan had less than 250 snaps and eight tackles, he transferred in from Bemidji State (DII) and was not an all-conference player.

Carter Jenki was a 2- time all Ivy league DL he had 9.5 TFLs and 42 tackles overall. He also will be part of a defensive line rotation next year.

Who is the better player? We will find out next season. Who comes in as a higher rated/higher quality player? Jenki.

There are roughly 4,000 snaps for front 7 players in the regular season. The Illini are going use 17- 25 players at those positions. Even Illinois' best defensive players (Randolph, Newton, Jacas, Coleman who were paid well) didn't play 80% of the defensive snaps. There aren't very many typical 'defensive starters' in the Illini scheme.

Would Bret and staff liked Coenen and Angelo to stay, of course.....but they also aren't losing sleep or fretting over it like some of y'all.

Exactly...not losing sleep...each dude is a value proposition...sometimes you have to let good players walk because you think you can get better player at equal or less $. As ultimate fans, we want a big spash...like yesterday, but the truth of the matter, i would think, is those take the longest because they are the most complicated when you are being thoughtful about the entire roster makeup. Patience, my friends...i have to tell myself that "on the daily" as B would say...

Last year Edwards and Briggs definitely weren’t rotational players. Maybe the way they rotated the dline this year is how we want to do it going forward.

This guy is absolutely lying to himself (guy your responding to not you). Mccullom was playing 70% of snaps at nose the last 6 weeks. Comparing Coenen to Jeneki is ridiculous because one was playing against Big Ten players and the other was playing against dudes who will be associates at Pearson Hardman next year.

Last year Edwards played 587 snaps and Briggs played 612. Those guys played the majority of the snaps. This year we did rotate more which I think is good. But it’s not something we’ve done much until this year

To make the point further, Coenen was not even a starter for Bemidji state, so not anywhere near an all conference player. credit to the staff for the deep scout and Eli definitely showed that he belonged, but I’m sure the staff didn’t feel like he was irreplaceable
