Saw this on another board, thought it was interesting:

Beatty skipped redshirting his freshman year, so he never used a redshirt. He played 4 years, of course, and in theory has no more eligibility.

But: they just changed the redshirt rules. You can now play in 9 games and still redshirt.

Why doesn’t Beatty play in 9 games (every B1G game) and redshirt? Would get him one final year.

Unless something happened very recently, the 9-game decision is just a recommendation from the coaches group and not a new NCAA rule.

Because he's not a total loser like some of these dudes. He has a future after football in the medical field and will be just fine without football. So why waste another year when he could just get started on the other stuff.

You’re correct

He’s going to participate in pro day, which means he’d like to continue playing football. Would make more from NIL in college than he would on an NFL practice squad.

Doesn’t matter anyways. As @mhuml32 pointed out, players can still only play in 4 games before a redshirt, not 9 like I had thought.

So many wrong, unconstructive thoughts here.

Because it's a new era... and you can get paid the big bucks by way of NIL.

He's participating in pro day, has a chance to get drafted. I'd be SHOCKED if he doesn't land somewhere in the league.

Terrific punt returner, does not drop the ball, and great playmaking ability with the ball in his hands. Usually those guys find their place: see Isiah Williams.

Xavier Scott, Matt Bailey, JC Davis, Gabe Jacas all followed the same path. Especially Scott and Davis, as they were both granted additional eligibility. They all qualify as "total losers?"

FWIW, yes, I understand he does not have an extra year:
But the idea that coming back to school, improving your draft stock, while making good $$ .... makes you are a "total loser" is absurd.

You are valiantly attempting to bring sensibility to this discussion... Alas you will fail, as you cannot expect those with an agenda to change said agenda . . . However, I do applaud your efforts.

1. The NIL budget is mostly spoken for by now. Why would he come back and have to beg the program to pay him when they have already backfilled the WR room? How much would he actually make here? 150K? 200K? He's going to be a doctor, is a year salary there is worth it more than a single season playing football?

2. He might be drafted. But what's his NFL potential pay and future? What's his realistic path? IW has made $1,895,055 in his NFL career. I think a doctor clears that in 3 years once they are done with residency.

3. Xavier Scott, Matt Bailey, JC Davis, Gabe Jacas are Recreation, Sport, & Tourism, Kinesiology and Community Health majors. Them going back to play more football makes sense because they aren't going to have the same options as Hank post football. I mean come on... there are levels to this.

4. Its a loser move to not move on when your time is up. Im talking about the Trinidad Chambliss and Charles Bediako's of the world. He does not need to come back to school for money. His parents are both doctors and he came to Illinois on a free ride. He is going to make a lot of money away from the football field. So he does not need to sit around and waste years chasing something like some others guys need to.

5. You might not like to hear this... but squeezing more years out of college because you are not willing or able to move on... is a LOSER move.

I’d do it. Have there been any rumblings about Montana players coming?

I haven’t heard anything substantial.

All I heard was he followed the Illinois twitter account. I know most of the defensive starters have graduated or already transferred. Maybe after the spring semester we get a couple of their players that already transferred out. I know they had a dt that transferred to Iowa state
