Illinois Football Staff Thread

Seems like a longshot since he currently has a head coaching gig at FIU, but any chance with the recent Ron Turner lovefest, he could be a candidate. Internet says he is only making 600k, he is 3 years into losing records at FIU so his seat may be a bit hot, seems to be a favorite of both Smith & Whitman. The whole former head coach bit could be a bit awkward as well. But if you told me last week we would have Lovie as our head coach I would have called you all crazy.

Turner's Daughter just graduated UI last May.

For the most part, me neither.

Are we really going to be pointing fingers at someone for not being their best self under the Tim Beckman regime?

For me, seeing us hire Lovie in March and given a $4 million coaching staff budget, I would be expecting a lot bigger names than Luke Butkus, particularly the way his stint here went. I'm willing to let it all play out before I pass judgment, though.

Speak about not burning bridges, Lovie fired Butkus once when he was with the Bears.
Luke was a sacrificial lamb because the O-line was terrible (due to lack of talent). They brought in Mike Tice to coach the O-line and they were still bad. Anyways, what I'm getting at is that Angelo forced that firing, not Lovie.

Well, there's one consistency.........Luke keeps losing his job because his OL has no talent.

But since I don't know the first thing about coaching an offensive line, I'll have to say that I like the hire BECAUSE OF HIS LAST NAME. Plus I'm going to trust Lovie until I have reason not to.

So does the Butkus hire mean they have chosethe OC? Seems strange to hire Oline coach without the OC. I am thinking we may be almost all the way set. Just waiting for leaks and announcements.

A recruiting coordinator would be hugely valuable as a catalyst to make this thing recover faster. If the coaching really is good, you can still recover, but dang to get some good players up front would be great.

He graduated from Lamar HS in Arlington, Tx...a powerhouse program.

I think he will be great in our efforts in Texas.

They probably also need a bit of time to plan spring practices once they have everyone in place. It's going to be quite a meet-and-greet in the next couple weeks.

I haven't given any credence to the Ron Turner as OC possibility, but Hayes-Stoker worked with him in Chicago, followed in his footsteps at stops in Tampa and Indy, and spent a year coaching up the road from Ron at FIU. Lots of ties and I assume that Ron recommended him for at least a couple of his posts over the last five years. If an OC is hand picking his staff and it has Butkus and Hayes-Stoker on it, Ron Turner would seem to be plausible.

Ron Turner was interviewed today on the SCORE and they asked him specifically about coaching with Lovie. He gave the typical company line that he had a job and was happy.

Heard the mid-morning Score guys interview Turner this a.m. Was half-listening but pretty sure they asked him whether he'd be interested in joining our staff and he said no. This was after they inquired how he and Lovie were after he was dismissed by the Bears. To that, he said no hard feelings; they're fine now. He alluded to the fact that Lovie wasn't the main guy behind the dismissal. Folks still thinking that Lovie wasn't the greatest coach in the world may want to remember he was fed players and reported to the single worst executive in any sport at any level, ever, IMO.
