I'm very intrigued to see who Lovie hires to be the S&C coach. I would be willing to throw a heft amount for a top-notch one.

By all accounts a great guy, well liked by all his players.... but clean slate is usually better. Get Lovie's guys in there.

Lots of time, withholding judgment...underwhelmed thus far.

Not to worry yet though.

This would be a substantial step up for Nickerson and I have to believe he would strongly consider the offer.

No idea what kind of coordinator he would be, but he was one of my favorite linebackers ever to watch. Just ferocious

Pretty sure he'd be the DC in name only. It would be Lovie's Def I'd imagine.

My guess he only comes for DC. Wouldn't go from NFL lb coach to college lb coach imo

If Bellemy is gone is Nate likely gone as well then?

It seems he's wanting a very clean slate besides Phair who has coached with him before.

It would make sense. I like Bellamy about the most of any assistants. I have no feeling one way or the other on Nate. I am not going to let past Illinois ties make me feel one way or another about hires. I am underwhelmed so far. But OC and DC would be the names. If they are Nicherson and Garrick I would be happy. I still hope we have a top notch recruiter. But maybe Garrick and Hayes- Stoker are great recruiters. I am not sure about that.

I have to think that a man that's been around college and NFL football for decades is smart enough to know that you don't hire assistants without getting the OC and DC approval first. This isn't LS's first rodeo (he is from Texas, ya know;). HD and Garrick would be huge. Let's keep this is perspective. A couple of weeks ago we were going into Spring ball with a lame-duck HC and his lackeys. Now we're getting picky about the success our soon to be new OC and DC's had in the NFL? Come on guys. Disregard the wins/losses of the possible new coaches and look at the big picture. LS is getting long time coaches (some young, some older) that have had success as players and coaches in the NFL who also have enormous respect at home in some of the best recruiting areas in the country.

Great post. And let's not nitpick Lovie's position coach hires too much. You can't expect anyone to make a big splash with a WR or OL coach.

This[emoji651]. Everybody complained abthe way we have been for decades. Now "underwhelmed" at hiring assts in the likes of an asst hc of an NFL team, an oline coach with pro and college experience not to mention great family and university ties.

I am not totally sure how these things work on game day, but would Lovie be calling the defensive plays?

I have seen many offensive minded head coaches call the plays on Saturdays, but I cannot seem to recall a defensive minded coach calling the plays. Have I missed it, or in general do they do the prep during the week and let the DC call the actual defensive plays/adjustments on game day?

Just trying to relate this all to Lovie as the "actual" DC in various opinions.

Definitely not.

This offers him a chance to leap out of being a position coach, which ultimately is the parh to head coach.

If it's offered, i would be surprised if he turns it down

Did he or Rivera call defensive plays in Chicago? I know he called offensive plays for a season in Chicago, though. I don't believe he'll do either in Illinois.
