The problem the West has, looks like this:

Christ
Ferentz
Riley
Claeys
Harrell
Fitzgerald

versus Lovie

He is easily the biggest and most recognizable amongst the group. Lovie has instant credibility with parents and recruits. He walks in and he is the star, not the other way around. If Lovie is just an above average coach here we will dominate the West. Some of the above are great coaches but none exactly blow you away as recruiters.

Recruiting pitch is simple, come to Illinois, play for Lovie and meet Michigan or OSU every year for Big 10 Title

That coach above Ferentz named Christ might be tough to go against I heard he walks on water.

Let's be real, Harbaugh has more college recruiting experience and the same resume as Lovie a la Super Bowls. And Urban Meyer is Urban Meyer. He's the best in college football not named Saban.

Lovie is a great coach, but there is so much more to prove before he can be compared to what is happening at Michigan and Ohio State.

Harbaugh has a volatile personality. I think the amount of time between Super Bowl and collapse is telling. I'm not saying he's not a force. I will say that Lovie isn't college game tested but he might surprise, especially with AA athletes.

Urban is proven in the college game, period. Lovie is not but he's arguably seen football at a higher level. To compare the two seems premature. You mentioned Saban. A flop at the next level. Success or failure doesn't really translate a good comparison. So how do we know?

We don't know. Thus to be so absolute just seemed a bit premature. Just give him time to prove his salt here.

I wouldn't want to coach against that first guy though :D

Seriously though, I agree overall, good points. I think Chryst is solid and Wisconsin, until proven otherwise, will still be in contention every year.

Iowa, as a poster said, is up and down. Never seem to have stellar recruiting classes, but ferenz and staff usually coach 'em up.

Illinois definitely has he name recognition. Let's hope the coaching and recruiting match up. :thumb:

Spellcheck!!!!!!

We'll see about that. That's a bit of a stretch. The only thing we can be sure of is we're lucky we are not in the Big Ten East.

It's the pitch. Then bring in better talent than rest of West and it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy

But we know, for a fact, what Urban Meyer is. He is a hall of fame caliber college coach. As far as Harbaugh, I don't think anyone honestly thinks Lovie at Illinois is going to out-recruit him. If he does, that's definitely an upset.

Again, I'm as excited about Lovie as anyone, but I'm not about to book a flight to the National Championship game just yet.

Not to mention the program itself. We're not there. We might not get there. We don't need to get there for this to be the fairytale unqualified success of our wildest dreams.

This seems like the best attitude for us to take. We're not OSU or Michigan, but Lovie is a step in the right direction. To really become either of those programs would take more than 6 years.

I don't think anyone believes Lovie is going to place Illinois on par with Michigan or Ohio St in 6, 12 or 20 years.

I believe however that most do think that Lovie can place us in a position to challenge them with a frequency not yet seen at Illinois and frequency which makes those schools take notice.

I wouldn't go that far, either. Illinois basketball became a real powerhouse over a decade. Under proper leadership, we could potentially still be there today. I think an AD like Whitman can make it happen.

Don't disagree with the crux of what you're saying, but football is an entirely different animal than basketball.

Michigan's over/under was 7.5 last year. They won 10, not to mention the MSU game they won except didn't.

Really good coaching matters.

Exactly...coaching can help a kid turn the corner...truth is with the new class getting this coaching from the start no telling what we have!!! Most these kids have been playing ball since 6. And are way better than us at it. Most of the hem did have 10 other offers don't forget. I see like 12 kids in this last class that with Lovie can be good... Some are even sons of former.NFL players...so they know the game... And have been around it. I think we are in for some surprises...:illinois:

Depends on the recruit and what they are looking for...

It's like Tom Cruise coming in for your home visit and jumping up and down on your couch vs. Denzel Washington staring your Mom in the eye.

Holecek was offered a 1 year deal less than 200k from Cubit.

To add to this, there's a night and day difference in stability. Hopefully, Holocek makes the leap. I'm optimistic, because he isn't going to have a better situation than now.

Yeah, I really can't blame him for turning down Cubit's offer. The situation now is much different as there is stability for the foreseeable future. If he wants to get into college coaching, this would certainly seem like a good starting spot.

If Hardy Nickerson is the DC/LB coach, where would Holecek fit?

Don't have to put the LB title on Nickerson for him to coach the LBs. Holecek can be the 'LB coach', but would primarily serve as a recruiter on the staff, but I don't see him being an option here. Lovie has shown a commitment to hiring his guys.

So let's say you could have your pick at the remaining openings, who would you (realistically) like to see hired? We have 4 openings to fill RB, TE, LB, DB, and ST coaching jobs.
