So what are the odds McGarigle keeps his job after this season? I honestly have no gauge on what caliber the guy is.

My guess is that for the retainees, this season is an extended job interview.

Fair to say at this point that the recruitment at the position coach level hasn't quite gone to plan. Which is completely understandable given it's March.

Yup, but at least we got a high profile OC!

I really like the staff he put together. Got his OC and DC. Got a DBs coach from The U who hopefully can help recruit FLA. kept Phair which isn't a surprise he just happened to already be here before Lovie. The only one I'm not so sure of is LBs position coach. But I'm guessing if we are talking about Lovie Smiths decision making....I trust him that McGarigle fits what he wanted. Plus possibly Nickerson will also help at LB.

McGarigle is 32 and helps in Chicago area recruiting. Young up and comer.

McGarigle also played at Northwestern while McGee was coaching there - so that could possibly be a connection.

Haven't heard anything about what is probably the third most important position after OC & DC. Who is going to run our Strength & Conditioning program?

Haven't heard. But rumor has it that Brian Urlacher will be our shampoo & conditioning coach. :)

Teddy Purplestein actually giving props to an Illini coach? Wonders etc.

New Illinois coach Lovie Smith is retaining all three assistants Bill Cubit recently hired and who moved to Champaign -- Mike Phair, Tim McGarigle and Paul Williams l. Nathan Scheelhaase, who worked on the staff last year and was promoted by Cubit to QBs coach, also is being retained in a non-coaching role. Phair will coach defensive line, McGarigle will remain linebackers coach and Williams will remain defensive backs coach. Good to see this as Cubit was concerned about those three finding other jobs for 2016.

Of course, that's inaccurate because Jeff Hecklinski was also among that group, but whatever.

Teddy is just happy McGarigle doesn't get shut out.

We all know how much he bleeds purple, and mean McGarigle is the only coach in the B1G that played linebacker at NU and was drafted :D

What types of roles could Nate fill in a non-coaching role? Video coordinator, on-campus recruiting?

I love Nate, but he was only pressed into an assistant coach position out of necessity. He is a very smart kid, and I think he will end up being a good coach down the line. I think he could do well with recruiting, or in more of a football operations role.

I think Nate would be great at on-campus recruiting. Just hanging around that staff... imagine how much you'd learn with regards to coaching.

Anyway, I love hearing the staff in interviews. I honestly can't wait to get the first year under our belts and see what the coaches can do with a normal schedule. The workload for everyone is going to be crazy building up to this fall.

I hope everyone can keep this in mind as the season progresses. The staff is in a tougher than usual situation this year with the late start and this isn't an easy gig under the best of circumstances.

Regardless, how fun is it going to be to watch a team that really knows how to tackle? Can't wait to see the difference we see from spring to fall (or maybe spring to end of season?)
