Yes, some people have a failure of imagination when it comes to understanding what great people can accomplish, even at a young age. Just sit back and enjoy the show.

Edit: my comment is not directed at you, mostly at the airbags on TV.

I hear you! Still working hard to get over my disbelief, like so many others on this board!!

Coaching search says Tim Spencer will be RB coach. Was in Tampa with Lovie. He was also Ohio State's RB coach from 94-2003.

Does anyone remember those Nike commercials about 20 years ago with Dennis Hopper as the ref and he kept saying "Bad things, Man!" Wasn't Hardy Nickerson the subject of one of those ads? And now he's our DC? Unbelievable.

Illini football. Bad things, man!

Is Nickerson considered an 'up and comer' type coach? I look at his bio and he's only ever been a position coach outside of HS. I know that LS is going to run the D and take HN under his wing. Is this a choice made on potential and possible recruiting chops?

Spencer was the RB coach for Ohio State from 94-03. Bears RB coach from 2004-2012. RB coach at Tampa Bay from 2012-until now.

Presumably. He's an impressive dude. Lovie knows him well and knows what he needs out of a DC.

Tim Spencer as RB coach?! No way. I thought about the possibility, but figured it wasn't going to happen unless we at least offered him a co-coordinator role. If it holds up, that's amazing. Just coached Doug Martin to a massive season, has coached Forte, Eddie George at OSU. He's one of the top RB coaches in all of football.

Spencer definitely a home run hire. A top notch recruiter.

That guy must really, really like Lovie. Amazing how many connections he has/how well respected he is.

"Hey I coached Matt Forte and Doug Martin, want to come to IL (insert 5* RB)"

Those kind of comments need to make there way to all the best HS running backs!

Hiring coaches away from NFL teams is crazy. We're Illinois?? I guess that means something different nowadays

OC/QB: McGee
OL: Butkus
WR: Hayes-Stoker
RB: Spencer

DC: Nickerson
DL: Phair

3 more. An LB and DB coach certainly. Maybe DB is Mikail Smith. And then someone in a recruiting-focused role maybe?

I totally get it. I was cautiously optimistic about Whitman when he was hired, but I expected some minor mistakes first. He has totally surpassed my expectations so far. I went to school in the Tepper years, and I'm not conditioned to this kind of positive momentum either. But for once, I am excited about Illinois football. It's been a long time...
