Or maybe Paul Williams was a good hire by Cubit and Williams showcases a solid resume and Lovie considers him a very good coach.

Contracts tend to apply in US courts.

As I understand it, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, the ability to "block" coaches from making lateral moves between NFL teams, or indeed from even interviewing for those positions, is as a result of NFL rules governing its franchises, not non-compete language in any of the coaches contracts. The NFL does have a body of rules that its teams must follow in the coaching market, the "Rooney Rule" being probably the most well-known.

By way of example, when Bobby Petrino ditched the Atlanta Falcons in the dead of night before even finishing one season as the head coach to take the Arkansas job, they were absolutely furious, but were powerless to do anything about it.

And anyway, courts tend to be fairly skeptical of non-compete clauses and in a pro-to-college scenario where there is no direct on-field competition my guess is that would have a hard time holding up. Not my area of expertise though, so again, correct me if I'm wrong.

Would definitely be in favor of this.

Strong recruiter in Illinois

Yes I feel comfortable with his strong ties to Illinois. In my opinion Hecklinski solidifies us with the in state coaches/recruits we desperately need.

Where does it say anything about him staying on? This is from their update today.

Illinois:
Per source, defensive backs coach Paul Williams will stay on board as part of Lovie Smith’s staff. Scout has reported the same. Also, multiple reports state that tight ends coach / special teams coordinator Jeff Hecklinski will not be a part of the new staff.

Maybe they made the mistake and changed it???

When I looked at footballscoop, it did say "will be a part...."

fixed mistake, like illinidarrin said.

How many of the current (including Lovie's hires) staff have ties to the state of Illinois? No doubt Nickerson and McGee will pull out of state kids, but who are the heaviest hitters in Illinois?

So far Butkus is our Chicago guy. Still have 3 spots to fill so wouldn't be surprising to see 1 more Illinois name, but this staff will recruit a lot more nationally.

Butkus and, of course, Lovie has strong Chicago area ties.

Is there any chance that Lovie brings in 'placeholder' staff for a year and hires guys he actually wants when the carousel is actually spinning?

It's possible. I do think you will see more turnover then normal on his staffs, especially if we are successful. I think it should be expected since he is going with some younger dynamic coaches. He also has a lot of ex-NFL types who may jump back as they prove themselves or if they don't enjoy what college coaching entails. As long as we keep replacing them with other talented coaches I think it works in our favor. It appears coaches like to work with him. We now offer much more competitive pay. If he also becomes known for furthering coaches careers he will get the pick of the litter of assistants.

My FIL and I were talking about this. We were both thinking this is definitely what will happen. Lots of guys have invested a lot of time with their current teams. Has to be limiting our options

I think he has the coordinators he wants in McGee and Nickerson, but at the position coach level, I wouldn't be surprised to see some turnover, which is pretty normal anyway.

and perhaps the coordinators can bring one of their own....but have to wait to make sure they aren't in consideration for the open spot they left behind.
