Obviously we have these helmets, but has there been any talk about possibly having an entire throwback uniform for the Michigan game? Obviously you could not straight up do this in a modern look and have it be aesthetically pleasing like you can for older baseball uniforms, but I would at least be curious what a modern spin would look like, at least taking some inspiration from it!

you don't have to try too hard to imagine it

I may be a sucker for nostalgia, but I like the slant ILLINOIS. It didn't really register to me as a child that the Giants did it first, I always thought of Wheaties instead.

I also miss the slant Illinois helmets, I just wasn't a fan of the jerseys from that era.

If you are talking about the Zook/Beckman era, I agree. We were wearing that 2005/06 Nike template with the goofy piping for YEARS longer than any other school. That and I do think the slant Illinois with the blue outline kind of diminished the helmet. It was fine for the Rose Bowl season, but by 2010 we should have had something better. That was my major gripe from the era.

But the 2001 set was awesome, and I think the 2001 helmet is going to look fantastic on the current unis.

Yes I'm talking about the piped weird blue polo collar looking uniforms from the Zook era. All I remember from the Beckman era was the slightly metallic finish looking awful in Orange.

If so, then that's a deeply puzzling choice to not use it at all for an entire season. It's a relatively new design and this year - the first of the new B1G - is a significant one in terms of new people encountering the conference and its member schools. I'm not sure how you can be committed to Block I on the helmet and put it in timeout for all of 2024.
I don't think they said that unless I missed it.

I was assuming each throwback would get a game (or 2) and the regular helmet would get the remainder.

A helmet schedule for the Memorial Stadium 100th Anniversary season will be released at a later date.

i might be the only one that liked the anodized orange helmets of the 2014 rebrand. i think the white helmets from that set also really popped.

that being said, i think the arched illini are my favorite of the bunch. i feel like if one or two of the helmets take the world by storm there's a non-zero chance they could replace today's standard block I
IMO the original white helmet from the rebrand with the blue mask and stripes is the best we've ever had. Also the one and only time we've had a successful orange football jersey.

we should never wear the same color helmet as the opposition

Maybe I’m misreading it, but Bielema says “our helmets will honor a different era each week”; I took that to mean we’re choosing one from this set on a game-to-game basis.

The problem with the slant Illinois for me is twofold - 1. Many people recognize it as a NY Giants knockoff. Therefore it’s not ours.

2. It came about when we had utter amateurs running the athletic dept. The amateurs who drove our program into the ground. It reminds me of their stupid and long lasting mistakes that hurt our program.

The curved Illini reminds me of the great Mike White years when the 80s belonged to the Illini

Yeah those looked good, and IIRC we wore those for almost the entire first season post-rebrand because that was the only home set Nike had shipped us.

I have a rule about orange jerseys (I did not choose my school based on the colors, if I did Illinois would be down there quite a ways), a team needs to either :

1. minimize the orange, use it sparingly and exclusively as an accent color (ex Chicago Bears especially from the Butkus/Sayers era) or
2. Fully embrace it and be in your face about it, the brighter thee orange the better (ex these jersey, Netherlands soccer, Clemson football)

I vote for option 1.
