Illinois Golf 2022-23

Not the finish they wanted for sure. Have to give UGA credit, they played a great tournament. Illinois still tied for the lowest round on the course today. Got through to the Finals….that’s really all that matters at this point. Coach Small would not agree with that I’m sure, at least he wouldn’t say it out loud.
NC and Vandy both didn't win their regional either, so no shame there.

The championship is being played in AZ at the Grayhawk Golf Club. We played this tournament there in 20-21 so some of guys should be familiar with it. Of course, the same goes for many of the other teams.

A lot of top teams minus Arizona and Tennessee clutched up today after horrible starts. Poor NIU, GA southern, UNF, MSU, and more who choked today. Osu is in too purdue played horrible Indiana played solid but didn’t make it. Northwestern probably in. Texas an and m shouldn’t be in but so many teams choked and they’re in a playoff with clemson to make it. ZERO 1st ranked teams won their regional. Crazy. A lot were in 3rd-5th place.

Just checked and ASU might win their regional or Stanford the 2 seed might. So 1 top seed might win. And Vanderbilt after a horrible first round has played very well and could tie for first.

Out of the Top 30 teams, looks like #12 Tennessee, #19 Arizona!!!, #20 Ole Miss, #21 Oklahoma State, #23 San Diego State, #26 GeorgiaSouthern, #27 Kansas State, and #29 Wake Forest probably won’t make it.

I will not say unranked NIU choked today. Played great golf to win the MAC. Were in great position today, fell short. That's it. That's golf.

Have you ever choked, anyone? In sports or life itself? I have. I can tell you stories of my own personal true chokes as an infielder in baseball. Scary. I still shudder. Nausea, nightmares. (But I could hit, baby! Should have been a designated hitter! The only way I choked was up or down was on the bat)

A couple of major league ballplayers couldn't throw to first base or get the ball over homeplate as I remember.

NIU was no choke.

Congratulations NIU!

Seriously, though, this is great! Schools like Michigan and even to a lesser extent Wisconsin have shown that the money and prestige from having top tier athletics (especially but not only football) helps the entire university and does nothing to diminish its academic prestige! If anything, I have heard of quite a few students who have the pedigree to go to an Illinois or Michigan or North Carolina or Wisconsin or Texas realize that they are all amazing schools and start picking based on things like how much they like the campus or how fun the sports scene is! So congrats, Illini!

17 of the top 20 Moved on to AZ. Tennessee, Arizona and Ole Miss, all top 20 teams, failed to make it. As we know, Grayhawk is a demanding course and we will need to play our game. Still a tough field but we have 5 guts who can bring it with one of the best golf coaches in America. We can win this. I think Tommy and ADC are upset they failed to get here last year and want to put a closing stamp on their great careers by helping the Illini win a NC.

Jerry Ji is in the field at the KLM Open (DP World Tour) in his home country this weekend, but playing as an amateur. Hmm....

I guess I’m not sure why the Hmmm. Surprised he’s maintaining amateur status?
I'm wondering why he wouldn't be with the team at Grayhawk? Seems odd, but maybe golf teams travel differently than other sports.

Golf teams do travel differently, you may bring one back up, but that would be it. I don't really see this as a sign Jerry is transferring, but I wouldn't be blown away if he did. I don't know just how the freshman's game will translate to the college level right off the jump so having the experience of Nico and Jerry to fill out the top 5 is hugely important. Next year a lot will be riding on their shoulders.

Exactly. Each team brings 6 players and starts 5 of them each round. I think this started as, a player could be substituted for only because of injury, but I think has since changed to being much more flexible. Most times the 6th guy never tees it up. I am sure Voois is making the trip with the starting 5. I suppose some teams might bring players that aren’t eligible to compete but I don’t think it’s common.

I was talking to the father of a player at the tournament last year in Scottsdale. His son was not in the team's top 6 and came to support his teammates, but had to pay for his own flight and hotel.

Tee times are set for the 1st round tomorrow. Buchanan tees off on #10 at 11:30 AM and will be followed by Hunt, Besard, Kuhl, and ADdC. The Illini are paired with Vanderbilt and North Carolina. That means the top 3 teams in the nation are playing together, which will make for some top notch golf. Highs for the next three days are forecasted to be 96, 95, 95 which for this time of year in the Phoenix area could be a lot worse. It looks like it could be somewhat windy each day. Let's go!!! I L L
