Illinois Golf 2022-23

Yeah, the unfortunate news is that it appears we're going to see ~8 of the top 11 teams qualifying for Match Play. In that field, anyone can defeat anyone.

Maybe we'll get lucky and face SF or Colorado in round 1 on Tuesday.
There's a real chance 15 of the top 16 teams make the cut of 15 (13 seed Tennessee didn't make the championship at all), which would be an absurdly good field. Currently all 15 are in at least a tie for the cut, though Alabama has really tailed off today and has about 4 holes to right the ship before falling below the cut line.

Also Georgia has continued to cool off and has fallen to 18th.

For those learning…if the top 15 teams advance to match play, does it matter much if you finish 1st or 15th in stroke play? Ie. If the number one team in the country coming into the tournament finishes 15th, do you risk being paired against them in the first round of match play by finishing first?

There are two cuts - first to 15, then to 8.

The cut to 15 doesn't change order or format - it's just a cut. The match play is a bracket of 8, seeded based on standings after those four days of stroke play.

Top 15 today will be reduced to Top 8 end-of-day Monday.

Then match play begins on Tuesday, with #1 vs #8; #2 vs #7; #3 vs #6; #4 vs #5.....................and these 8 team rankings are based upon how you finish in stroke play.

Only the top 8 teams in stroke play qualify for the match play playoffs starting on Tuesday. Tomorrow, the individual players championship
is determined, and the top finishers will get direct entry to the PGA tour.

FSU with a fun card. One guy with all pars and a single bogey, outdone by a teammate who par'd every hole. Best one is their top-ranked guy who managed three birdies... spoiled by a triple.

Illinois with a 19 stroke advantage over the 9th place team with 1 round left to play, so making final 8/match play is a given. Tomorrow is all about seeding.

The wind is starting to pick up. Couple that with the hard, fast greens and you are going to see some pretty high scores from the teams who are on the course right now.

Among the early finishers, Georgia is currently sitting in the clubhouse at +24, 3 shots off the current cut line, tied for 17th, trailing 3 teams still on the course. If the course plays rough this afternoon on the back 9, they could still back into the top 15, but things aren't looking good.

Also, #5 Texas Tech is +7 through the first 8 holes, slipping to +24, and would be the only one out of the top 16 teams that wouldn't make it to tomorrow if they can't right the ship.

Texas is playing super well. I saw a guy on Georgia eagled on 12 like Jackson! Also an eagle on par 5 by someone! First one

The afternoon session is only half done, and Georgia has already backed their way into the top 15, now tied for 15th. Texas is the only late starter that is playing well right now, having climbed their way into 14th at the current expense of Oklahoma.

As things stand right now, it looks like Illinois and Pepperdine are effectively locks for the match round (barring complete disaster, but even a moderate disaster would leave either in the top 8, they have a 19 and 16 stroke cushion, respectively). Florida, UNC and Georgia Tech are all at least fairly safe barring a terrible final round, leaving effectively 3 spots up for grabs between Stanford, , ASU, FSU, Vandy, Virginia, Auburn, and Texas A&M. Alabama and 2 others will also get to play, but they likely have too many strokes and teams to climb over to sneak into the top 8 in one round (barring some team putting up another 269), so it's 2 locks, 3 safe teams, and 7 teams vying for the last 3 spots.

Glad Illinois is in the first group.

I didn't know about the direct entry to PGA tour. How many get that? That's pretty sweet, says everyone but the coach who doesn't want to lose that guy.

This cut line is great fun! I thought Texas Tech had screwed the pooch, but they are sitting in a realistic spot to back themselves in. They are almost done, but 18 looms.

Texas is playing well at -1 on the day (and currently with Tech at +26), but has 6+ holes of the back 9 in front of them. Not happening.

tOSU can earn it by outplaying Arkansas. I don't expect anything crazy like them both going negative to edge out Oklahoma and Tech, but... maybe!

Oops, I meant Georgia, not the Sooners. And Texas bags two birdies with tOSU slipping as I type

The back 6 holes still loom, though.

Trust me, the vast majority of players prefer the crack of dawn tee times as opposed to starting at 1 pm with temps nearing 100 degrees. Time does not matter to those kids competing for a national title...but temps do.
Maybe. But I live in Palm Springs, which averages 3 degrees hotter than Phoenix and I would still rather play at 1:00. I did it today and yesterday. Each man's biorhythms are his own I guess.

Also, I'm older and stiffer than these young athletes.

Plus they probably haven't adjusted to the time change, so it is like 800 which is perfect
