No idea on Voois. His amateur record was really strong so have to think it’s a redshirt year to get a little bigger and stronger. The courses these guys play demand length which a lot of incoming freshmen don’t have yet.

They have a commitment from Max Herendeen for next yet year. Strong amateur record.

Next year looks like Hunt, Buchanan and Voois as likely locks. Barger was a preferred walk on I believe so not the amateur record of a really high level recruit. Lang is probably a contributor next year also. Ji has another year left I think if he can get back to himself. Don’t think Small could be counting on that though. If Keating does leave I would expect a transfer in to take that scholarship.

Man, would it be great to have a freshman like Hardy again who could win Bigtens.

So, we could lose him, Besard, Chassart, Kuhl, Ji and Lang. A couple of those could conceivably have a covid year, I guess. Who do we have committed as recruits? Do we need to hit the portal?
Portal should help. Voois was injured to start the year but I think the staff really likes him and he's playing again and well for a freshman coming off of injury I believe. Might need to get a transfer yea. Ji and Lang could play but I doubt Small relies on them.

Lot of talk about taking scholarships, but for at least 60 years, the NCAA has only allowed 4.5 scholarships for golf. Does anyone know for a certainty how those are being allotted? Many programs do not give more than 1/2 scholarship (either tuition and fees OR room and board). Anyone know how Mike Small has broken those down in the past?

I don't know, but it seems to be easier to deal with the 4.5 limit than it used to be. Two years ago (I think) the NCAA relaxed the rules against supplementing athletic scholarship aid with academic and need based financial aid. Athletes are now able to receive as much of that as they are eligible for. For instance, under the relatively new Illinois Commitment program if a student's family income <$67k then all tuition and required fees are covered (for Illinois residents). Those resources can also be enhanced with NIL. Finally, our athletes now qualify (starting this year) for the Alston awards for satisfactory academic progress to the tune of $6k/year.

I saw the other day we landed a kid from Australia named Joseph Buttress for the 2024 class. He potentially looks like a kid that could be top 5 player right away.
I haven't seen this announcement, do you have a link? seems like a good player but I don't see anything connecting him to us.

Illinois is off to a good start this spring with one hole remaining as play was suspended in the second round of the Hal Williams Invite:

Super balanced play and if Buchanan comes in with a par on his 18th tomorrow morning each of the 5 starters have already contributed. AdC again is leading the way for the Illini with -6 in 5th place with Bassard and Hunt at -5 and Kuhl at -4. AdC is doing his usual which is not tons of birdies but he doesn't make bogeys either. 2 for the 1st two rounds, we are gonna see this dude on tour before long. Very mature player.

Great finish to the round this morning, each player had one hole left and hunt and Bassard both birdies stretching the lead to 5 strokes after two rounds and they are opening up more of lead in the final round today. Up 8 through 6 in round 3. Lots of golf to go but this is a great start.

About mid way through round 3 and the Illini are up 8 strokes on second place Arkansas. The really impressive thing is the strength all the way across the lineup. Two at -7, one at -6 and two at -5. (Our last guys at -5 are equal to Arkansas second guy !!)
Exactly pretty much was typing the same thing as you. This team is very deep, maybe even more deep then the recent great teams.

Also cream is rising in this tourney, k-state/Arkansas/Illinois are notch above rest. Arkansas is better then the ‘rankings’ which are tough in college golf. The kid leading is a top 20 amateur in the world despite struggling early on this year.

Great performance from the team! Jerry had one good day but I don't think he will ever be the same. Injuries man. Ryan's second round was nice he should be able to slot in next year as maybe the 5th guy and we can see a leap from him. Seems to be doing much better coming back from his injury.

Detry ended the day at -4 tied for 12th
Hardy missed the cut by a stroke
Actually play was suspended by darkness. Nick has a 36 foot birdie putt on his 17th hole of the day. Needs a birdie there or his last hole tomorrow morning to make the cut. Triple bogey on his 2nd hole yesterday came back to bite him.
