Illinois Golf 2023-24

Gals lost 2 players from last years team. Super young team minus sy who’s very good the rest are young it’ll take time to build them up

Sy is really good. Lee is great and young. The other girls are either just kinda bad or young. Going to be a long rebuild for the women’s team

the boys are back in action today at the boilermaker. Field is not terribly strong but the course is a great one. Ackerman-allen is routinely a top college home course. Playing at about 7300 so lets see how they do. off to a solid start but early days still. Hunt not in the top 5 again. He appears to be out to prove himself.

Hunt is off to a good start. He needs it. Hope to see Voois bounce back too. I think ideally the foster is hunt, Buchannan, Herendeen, and then 4-5 is 2 out of 3 of Voois, goecke, Crawford.

I do too, but Hunt has been the odd man out so far this year. Goecke and Crawford are very experienced 5th year seniors that could cement themselves in the top 5 also, he needs good performances.

He’s been struggling a lot for sure. He needs to play well and be consistent. Talent wise he’s clearly the 2nd/3rd best on the team

Hunts problem is he has stretches of great holes when he’s out but when he’s off he can be bad. An 8 on a tough par 5 but that’s just bad.

Illinois women had a great start and are collapsing on the back 9, men are struggling too on the back. Hope 14 is killing them.

Former illini and Bloomington native Tj barger playing very well for ISU. Their other best player was a D2/3 golfer in 2021 and has had a crazy rise it seems like

Illinois State is up on us by 10 strokes at the end of first round. We are currently tied for fifth in a very weak field.
Women are in 6th (of 14) near the end of round one.

Purdue is playing horrendously but they’re playing better to start the 2nd round. They’re like the 3rd best big ten team probably. Worth pointing out many northern schools start cold in the fall and get better in the spring generally.

I guess tj barger was good enough for illinois huh
Doubtful. He has the 5th best scoring average at ISU coming into this tournament. Let’s not make any concrete judgement off of 25 holes of golf. That goes for any team or player.

This team coming out and winning that first tournament shocked me. They lost two incredible players from last years team. I think this year will be a challenge. They need Hunt to have an all big 10 type of season. He’s certainly capable.

Very true overall. He does look good here. But so does the whole of ISUs top 3 guys maybe they’re just having a great day. And yea illinois winning the first tournament was a shock. Max was unreal and jackson and Ryan each had a really good round.

Yep if hunt isn’t the 3rd/4th best player on this team and consistent then we will probably not have a good year. Unless multiple transfers/freshman step up. Or Jackson and herendeen play like top 5 college golfers all year

Not gonna be a fun night at the hotel in West Lafayette tonight. ISU and NIU putting it on em so far. It would be a fantastic win for either of those programs obviously.

Might see Voois for Goecke tomorrow.

I don’t remember the last time mike small changed a team mid tournament. And the tournament doesn’t really matter much. But if we want to win ryan and Jerry for timmy and Tyler

I don't believe you can change mid tourney regular season. those 3 are playing as individuals not as part of the team. If that was the case everybody would bring 8 instead of 5 and just rotate who was hot. this has been discussed in the past and you can do it to some level I believe in the championship. There are hurdles due to rankings and what qualifies players for the end of the year graduations to pro golf. if the ruled changed it was very recent.

Any of the bottom three in for Goeke and we gain a min of 4 strokes and a max of 15 for the tourney. But this isn't in a vacuum, when you are in the counting spots the pressure is higher for sure.
