What would everyone's reactions be if Tilmon re-re-committed in a joint announcement with Smith? I know JT's drama and rollercoaster recruitment have rubbed some people the wrong way, so from a PR standpoint for him, I think this would be a good play. Everyone couldn't help but be excited. I'd welcome him back.

If you love someone, let them go. If they return, they were always yous. If not, they never were. That's how I feel about it.

I can't believe anyone here or any fan of Illinois basketball would have a problem with it (even though I know some will). If the coaching staff is good with Tilmon than why should someone sitting on their couch in Champaign be pissed off? We had a coaching change, the kid has a lot of different pressures, and frankly w/o Smith we have a lot of questions going forward. But turning down a 4/5* at our greatest position of need over hurt feelings seems the height of stupidity

I don't think that would be fair to Mark Smith. Give the young man his minute is what I say and if Tilmon wants to follow the next day then do it. Now if it was Mark's idea, then cool, otherwise I think he deserves his minute in the sun (there will be more to come but nothing in life is guaranteed).

I meant like an actual joint announcement, where they were both involved in some way (Twitter photo, ceremony, etc.)

I didn't mean a situation where Jeremiah just piggy-backs on Smiths announcement later the same day or something like that.

I find it a little strange we havent heard more about trying to get some bigs this year. Maybe I'm reading too much into the silence and I get it's still early, especially for grad transfers, but we've been linked to a couple wings and if I had to bet on it I dont think Toppin plays at all next year, should he commit.

Either we've got a big lined up, or this narrative that BU's system doesn't need bigs is actually true.

No one is turning anything down. But the way JT handled his flip flopping was classless, and will probably take some a bit of time before they are showing the love he was getting a month ago.

I have not really followed recruiting much in the past. But I have sort of gotten hooked lately I think due to the Mark Smith saga becoming almost a soap opera. Can't turn my head away. Anyway, I have been reading the recruiting thread every day and notice all the offers BU has been making. Is this normal? Did Groce make all these offers? Or perhaps is it due to having 4 scholarships available? Perhaps that is more than normal? Thanks in advance.

I guess you didn't look hard enough but a large chunk of those offers are not for the 2017 class but rather the 2018 and 2019 classes. Some of the players (Ayo, Sousa) Groce had already offered but with a new regime, obviously formerly committable offers are no longer on the table unless the new coach makes it apparent. Also, the large amount of offers is not an uncommon practice. One must cast a wide net to catch the fishes, regardless of size.

'Hearing rumblings of Tilmon & Smith committing to Illinois. That would be huge!'

Is this the rumblings that others are hearing? (I got this from my twitter feed, not a pay site)

Wow! Would be great to get a third commitment from him! Maybe for fun he could transfer to UI after his freshman year.

As long as he didn't use the phrase "I'm taking my talents to South Quad", I'd be thrilled. Heck, he could even paraphrase LeBron and I'd still be thrilled.

Pretty sure this is just a random student on Twitter?

Come on...he's a kid! If you want make comments like that about the adults in this situation fine, but don't attack the kid! By all accounts it sounds like this is a tough family situation the kid is in. Blame the parents and or other adults in the situation!

I'd be very skeptical that he would ever take the floor in an Illinois uniform. Leaving LaLu and going back to ESL just makes me think he's not that interested in being coached up. I think he would wilt under the high octane way Underwood runs a practice. Can't see him on the treadmill. Thinking SLU.

EDIT: NO inside info at all just a gut feeling.

Wow if we were to get Jeremiah Tilmon and Mark Smith what a statement that would send to the B10 and national scenes.

(I'm aware there is like a sub-10% of that happening but where's the fun if we can't dream of some possibilities!)

I'll go 51% on Smith, <1% on Tilmon.

I think its more what BU looks at as a big vs what we think of as a big, I believe going forward we will see more guys like Auggie and Lowell

Hmm, so you're suggesting a big guy is playing the ol' silent verbal, verbal, LOI, Reaffirm, Release, Silent verbal play eh? Interesting....:)

assuming the events are independent. sounds like there is some (unknown) correlation involved.

For basic statistics with no outside forces it would be something like 1/2% but I highly doubt these two events would be completely independent of one another.

Can't remember how probabilities work. Would that be like a <5% chance of both of these things happening?

My <1% on Tilmon takes into account the chance we get Smith because there appears to be zero chance we get him otherwise, so that <1% reflects us getting both.

51% may be low, but we've experienced too many last second nutpunches to be confident about anything recruiting related. Hard to take us against the field on any player, especially one choosing between so many excellent programs and his parents apparently having conflicting wishes. The only reason I'm as high on our chances as I am is that all the various twitter/247 smoke seems to be pointing toward Illinois and cash, who has a good track record, seems to think that it's a done deal. I went from about 25% to 51% on the heels of all the good reports. Will be happy when he signs.
