All due respect, if I'm Ramey I'm wondering wth?

I see what you're trying to do/say, but I'd want to know what THIS TEAM is going to do.

If I'm Cuonzo, I show a clip of MU in the NCAA tourney. That enough is a mic drop v Illinois.

Yeah, I hate to admit that I'd agree with this. Ramey was probably 3 during the 2005 final four. The reason why you show clips of the 2005 team is so he can see how a beautiful an offense can be when you have 3 ball handlers and 5 shooters on the floor at the same time. Alternatively, you could just show him highlights of the GSW this year...

Let us be honest. You show highlights of his teams at SFA. Then look at him and say "can you image what I can do with actually top tier (NBA) talent?" Follow that up with AYO #1 in IL, Griff #1 in NY, TJ #10 in California, then "you wanna be apart of finding that out?"

Which clip would you show? The pre game warm ups? Maybe BU should show a clip of that atrocious first round performance.

Show him highlights of all that plus the Chief doing his thing at halftime....tell him if he signs LOI....the Chief will make a return:D

I would also show him 30,000 Illinois fans turning up for a *practice* when the Illini were in the Final Four in St. Louis.

And maybe a montage of all of the Braggin' Rights wins over the years :)

I'd add in some clips of Trent and Ayo dominating this past season, plus add in some Jawun Evans since that's probably the role Ramey would most likely play in BU's offense. "Hey, Courtney! One season with Jawun and I got him to the NBA! Now imagine what you could do with guys like Ayo and Trent surrounding you!"

You show him clips of Evans - I think that is the best sell since it's very comparable to Courtney's game.

Cuonzo on the other hand could show clips of his team getting dominated by Illinois, Georgia (SEC Tournament), and Florida State (NCAA Tournament).

He could also show clips of Tilmom and Barnett getting pulled over for drinking and driving, Phillips doing weird sex things and getting booted, and Harris leaving the team mid-season. I'm sure that would impress the Ramey's.

Completely true, he never got buried. But we're talking about roles here. There's no doubt we can get Courtney Ramey minutes next year and beyond, the question is if we can offer the role he wants.

Mark Smith got taken out of the role he was sold on and put somewhere else for the betterment of the team at the first sign of trouble slash Frazier emergence. That's quality coaching, it made the team better, and I wouldn't have wanted Underwood to do any different. But there are consequences. The better you recruit the more options guys have. A college basketball coach in 2018 has to be conscious of that.

And of course, role isn't the number one consideration for every kid, probably not for most kids. But it was for Smith, which was very public both at the time of his commitment and his decision to transfer, and folks here keep saying it's a primary consideration for Ramey too.

This may all be kind of moot discussion. IIRC, the pitch to Ramey was that he could co-exist in a world with Ayo and TF rather than being THE lead guard and be part of a dynamic offense. The roster last year was wide open, with TJL the only holdover PG and a brand new system. It makes perfect sense that BU would sell competing for the lead guard role to Mark. With TF and Ayo in the fold, he doesn't get to make that argument. I actually think it hurts his credibility with Ramey if he does.

The one minor quibble with your point: I don't think you can say it was the first sign of trouble that Mark got taken out of his lead guard audition. TF didn't start a game until the first game of 2018, and Mark didn't get taken out of the starting lineup until the game after that, when we already had 7 losses and a dismal outlook for the NCAA tourney. I think BU really wanted to keep Mark happy (for maybe longer than he should have), but had no choice when TF proved to be the only player outside of Leron to generate his own shot in the B1G season.

I would pay a not insignificant amount of money for Premium Loyalty where hypothesizing about in-room recruiting pitches to teens earns you a temporary ban.

Mark Smith got several opportunities through the end of the year to play with the ball in his hands and create. He could not do it.

There will always be tick for kids that can create with the ball in their hands. I don't know how realistic it is to be brutally honest with kids but the reality is that their role will be directly correlated to their performance.

Shabazz Napier, Ryan Boatright and an above average 6'9" player surrounded by a bunch "guys" won a national championship 5 years ago. Give me all the best point guards and we'll find a way to win.

This last one was just one step removed from having KB33 in the room ready to rain down YouTube comments on the Rameys

At least we're not photoshopping Ramey in an Illini jersey or posting the Ron Paul "It's happening" .gif

Look, I know you say that now, but if we get Ramey, I'm posting that gif whether you like it or not.

Agree, the Pac 10 is forgottonia of P5 college hoops.

If the age thing forces him to reclassify to 18, its possible he may not yet have the right courses done to enroll at Illinois. I'm speculating but there's certainly something odd going on with him to be officially visiting Oregon at this point.

Mark Smith got taken out of the role he was sold on

i think I've read all your posts about this and i'm still confused on many levels...

1. you seem to know with a large amount of certainty what was "sold" to him. I wholeheartedly agree with other posters' suggestions on premium board membership. Virtually nobody on these boards has any idea what was sold to him and how it fits with what actually happened.

2. BUT let's assume you do know what conversations took place. Then you admit yourself that he was given the opportunity that he was sold. He just got "taken out of the role he was sold on" later. So...he had a legit chance. he just wasn't able to capitalize. That's life, it happens.

3. BUT, let's suggest that he was taken out of the role too soon. But that doesn't jive with the facts that we have. MS averaged 19.1 minutes per game last season. The only players to have significantly more were TF (26.3), LB (25.5), and MF (25). After those three, there's a (perhaps not coincidental) tight grouping of guards Alstork (22.6), TJL (21.4), AJ (20.1), and MS (19.1). Combine this with the fact that MS is the only freshman in that group, I think he got essentially the "experience-adjusted" minutes he deserved given the production he showed on court. Oh, and here's another factoid, MS actually averaged slightly more MPG than Kipper.

Yeah, you might argue minutes does not equal the type of role he expected, but, at worst case, to me that indicates that nobody expected TF to blow up like he did. But that isn't BU misleading MS. That's everyone's inability to predict the future. That's called life. And I would guess BU is saying that to future recruits and truly not misleading them.

ties will be resolved
Ramey has a hard decision. He is a recruit that I have seen play many times and I have wanted as an ILLINI for years. He is a great player and a good kid. His dad is a good coach. They know basketball.
I think Ramey wants to go to either Mizzou or Illinois. I think Texas also has a shot because neither Mizzou or Illini are perfect situations and Texas offers a lot that Ramey wants.
I don't think the Rameys are forcing that he needs the ball in his hands but he does not want the role the Mark Smith or Alstork had last year. Mizzou is a dumpster fire in the making. The kids they recruit are low integrity and the coach is a proven underachiever. I think Mizzou is the worst option but can he really come to Illinois with Ayo-Frazier-DWill and get the PT needed? I don't think they are as confident as they should be. Ramey is a game changer, he is a perfect fit for this offense but this is a huge decision for him.

I think he chooses Illinois because it is the right fit for him and a better fit for him than it was for Smith, Frazier or Ayo. This style of play is perfect for his skill set.

I L-O-V-E Ramey. He's a team player and total winner. Agreed, the scheme is perfect for him. Absolutely no reason our guards can't co-exist. Ayo & Trent can play off the ball. In fact, they will be better if they're not in the primary distributor role. Really, really hoping he chooses us.
