i think I've read all your posts about this and i'm still confused on many levels...

Yeah, you might argue minutes does not equal the type of role he expected, but, at worst case, to me that indicates that nobody expected TF to blow up like he did. But that isn't BU misleading MS. That's everyone's inability to predict the future. That's called life. And I would guess BU is saying that to future recruits and truly not misleading them.

We do know what BU marketed to him- to be the PG with the ball in his hands. Quotes all over the internet about this- it’s not speculation. But I agree with your ultimate point - Smith was given the opportunity and failed to deliver. And no indication BU was being disingenuous when he offered Smith the keys. He obviously didn’t know Smith wouldn’t meet expectations.

IMO-
M. Smith is gone so good luck wherever he goes

Ramey I don’t think we get him but if we do great. Would be a log jam & I think DMW would be odd man out. Feliz if he is that good take him but still DMW odd guy.
Be nice to get another Big that can contribute next year- easier said than done. Hinson sounds like a nice pick up but not sure with TJ if that makes a difference and our chances.
Matic what is his status?

Lidell seems like a no chance but never know
Okoro seems to be a long shot at this point

I mean, now we're getting into the impossible realm of determining who feels what and with how much legitimacy.

He was certainly disappointed in that this did not go at all how he thought it was going to go, and in the end, that's really probably all that matters - people in the Metro East will hear that side of it, and our future recruits will hear our staff's side of it.

But we happy few, we band of brothers that slogged through every game of the 14-18 campaign this year, should have a pretty clear grasp on the fact that he was still getting lots of tick even after Trent burst onto the scene.

Yeah, to say that our staff misled MS and there might be a pattern of that going forward doesn't hold much weight to me. There's a difference between promising a recruit something and delivering then having the recruit show he's not ready and adjusting from there (which is what happened) versus telling Mark he'd be the star and blatantly not giving him the chance.

To be fair, I don't think this is what S&C was saying at all. I think all he meant was that Mark wants that lead guard role and transferred out because he knew that he could no longer that here. Whether he felt like he was never given a chance is something that only he and his family know. The chance to be THE lead guard doesn't exist right with TF and Ayo, and it wouldn't make sense for BU to lie/mislead Ramey into believing it just to get him to commit while damaging his reputation with future recruits...

If Ramey wants the ball in his hands 80% of the shot clock role, he won't find it here. I think we're still in it because BU can sell an unstoppable offense with 3 ball handlers and Ramey has expressed an interest in being a part of it

So....now Liddell AND Okoro are long shots? Guess Underwood just needs to give up huh? :tsk:

I mean, my recruiting pitch in Ramey’s living room would be to show a tape of our bad team smoking Miznoz this year, a montage of the 05’ team, and finally a collection of dunks from the 88-89 Flyin’ Illini, then I would drop the remote sit back and stare at Ramey and his dad with a sinister grin.

Man am I glad you're not our lead recruiter :thumb: I kid I kid.

But the fact of the matter is that sadly, this generation of recruits probably couldn't care less about an Illini team from 13 years ago or 20 years ago.

I feel like the main (only?) major selling point we have right now is that our coach is pretty well known for having success (past year not withstanding) with a good offensive system that brings out the best of his guards (Jawun Evans anybody?) along with our incredible fan engagement and passion of course.

Especially in the hotbed of recruiting that is STL right now, I feel like if we can contrast this with how much Cuonzo has failed to have much success with elite talent, our dominance of Missouri in recent years as well as his lack of a bonafide offensive system besides "give it to our best recruit" we can edge them out for some high level prospects.

I for one am thankful that we are at least far removed from the days of "We have our pg.."

Lol I am bored and only being silly with my in home recruiting pitch! It really took off there.
My tongue is still planted firmly in cheek!

Edit: I have absolutely no clue how to pitch to 18y/o hs students.

Both Feliz and Griffin will be on campus. I assume they'd both be there. Wouldn't want to give that experience to one and not the other.

Wasn't the Pac 10 0-3 in the Tourney?

Absolutely.

However, they will likely go 2 for 2 in back-to-back years for #1 overall NBA draft picks and NBA MVP. If tournament wins were the deciding factor for college selection, Illinois wouldn't have a a player on the roster. There is far more NBA talent in the PAC12 than the B10. That is just a fact.

Stop with the what to show the recruits. The lead recruiter on the staff has put in enough time to know what should be driving the recruit's decision. Playing time, history, academics...No magic bullet.
