How can someone regarded as one of the best in NY be have over 200 players ahead of him? Seems a bit unfair, but if he is as tough as they say he is, perhaps this will become a motivator.

I didn't even realize Pickett had reclassified back a year. Actually I didn't know that was possible. Wonder if his game has progressed. I'm a bit surprised Miznoz was interested. Tough to imagine that one working out well, but who knows.

Pickett had a surgery recently, not sure if he'll be ready for next season.

Hope it works out for him, I always liked the kid.

As a follow-up, Griffin's re-ranking on Rivals moved his 247 composite score from 330ish to 214. Class ranking went from 26 to 24.

Another jump from Griffin in the final ranking. Now ranked 176th by 247 Composite and 199th by 247.

Well yeah, that's their whole recruiting strategy. Thought they got caught though.

Not exactly knowing how rankings are done, I'd have to assume theres some sort of combination of current skill/talent level, potential, and probability of success at the collegiate level.

Even though Griffin might be the best high school player in NY, it doesn't mean his game will translate well or improve in college as much as a guy like Moses Brown. It could also be that Griffin was a late bloomer and it's hard to move up boards quickly. As others have said, the difference between a player ranked 150 and 250 is much smaller than a guy ranked 50 and compared to 150.

These rankings are there to evaluate a player's prospects at the college level, not how good they were in high school. But obviously, good players in high school typically make good players in college. That being said, a 6'4" center who averaged 20 and 10 in high school ain't gonna get much love from 247.

Griffin was a very good high school player. I think there's a good argument to be made that he we was POTY in NY. He was the best player on the best team in the state. But Moses Brown is a still a better college prospect at 7'1" with good mobility and athleticism.

By all accounts, THT would have been a superb addition. Too bad.

Not sure if this update has been mentioned.. Griffin 247 composite ranking is 176. Tevian Jones composite ranking is 113 (not sure how he isn't in the top 100, considering 247 has him at 94, Rivals has him at 82, and ESPN lists him as a 4 star recruit but not in their top 100).

Former target DJ Stewart also on that list, but for something else.. I wanted him in orange and blue real bad.

For a second I thought this was DJ Steward and I thought dang he committed early. Glad to hear that this is someone different and Adam Miller/DJ Steward are still viable targets.

Look who dropped in to see Liddell last night. Hope they fed them leftover meat loaf.

JR was good for a freshman. Around 8 points 5 rebounds if I recall. Take Malcolm by contrast (top 70ish prospect) - around 4.5 points 2.5 rebounds. Could have developed into an excellent player if he’d had his head on straight and stuck around. Probably not a top 20 all time illini frosh season - Trent’s frosh season was better - but he was legitimately good.

Richmond just had a way of not having good things happen for him on the floor. He was a confounding presence.

All of the same could be said of him off the floor too, so maybe that's not surprising.

He was obviously gifted as a player, it's not as if he was some phantom bust, but I can't look back and point out anything that he did particularly well.

JR was All Freshmen team in the B1G. On the court play wasn't his issue.

My larger point was that you just never know. JR was probably the most hyped player to join the Illini in the last couple decades. We waited 4 years to actually see him in Orange and Blue, and I can't remember him ever starting a game.

Started 5 games of the 31 he played in.

He was very skilled and efficient around the basket.

People still point to Weber as the problem he wasn't more productive. Even after everything that transpired. The kid was just a problem that couldn't be kept under control. How do you reward him with more playing time when he wouldn't follow team rules? IIRC he was held out of games for disciplinary reasons.

Such a shame really. He could have made a great life for himself as an athlete. Hope someday he puts it together.

Edit: Didn't realize he is playing overseas now.

+1 By the end of his freshman season, you could see he was starting to put it together on the court, and then he had a suspension. IIRC, it was going into the postseason. He just hadn't matured enough as a man.

Another year would have been great for his development, but it's hard to say what would have happened given his attitude. He certainly had first round potential.

Richmond was a stud and Weber played Bill Cole over him.

This time of year always makes me laugh, talking about underappreciated early 80's players and how incompetent Weber was as a coach. I pity Dan trying to keep threads actually relevant (not that im helping).

If Richmond wouldn't have been so immature he would've started and played much more his year here. There were enough reports that signaled major issues. Weber tried instilling punishment by benching and what not, obviously it didn't work. It's always a shame to see these kids come in here and not get correct life guidance, I think it's easy to point to some guys recently who had trouble and obviously finished clean (Rice, Black) and those who have moved on after incidents and done well (Nunn), but also guys like Darius Paul who obviously needed something or someone to help. /End dad rant.

Also, playing older players always seemed like a trend for Weber. Most recruits dont come in and play immediately for him. I think Groce had a similar stubbornness, less exaggerated, but BU has already shown no fear in playing who he thinks deserves it. I think Ayo & co. will benefit from this, and I think guys like DMW and Ebo will be a step ahead compared to other sophomores based on playing time

Does anyone know if any of our coaches will be in Dallas this weekend for the big AAU tournament & which recruits they will be watching? I have heard that Coach K & many others will be in town.

Tevian would be about 15-20 spots higher if ESPN decided to rerank him. Just to show you how crappy ESPN basketball recruiting is they had him attending high school in Arizona with no offers until a few days ago.

They'll be there. It's an EYBL event, everyone will be there.

However, at least part of the staff is sacrificing the first day of the event to host Bryce Golden.

Here's the event schedule: https://www.d1circuit.com/eybldallas2018

They'll be most locked in to Mac Irvin Fire (Kahlil Whitney, Adam Miller) and Brad Beal Elite (Okoro, Liddell). Meanstreets will likely also have some players of interest, I believe DJ Steward will be on that team.

Plenty of others I'm missing.
