Choosing between Goodwin and Lewis in favor of taking three big men would be a mistake.

I would just love to get to the point where are we have to decide between taking a 3rd big or only being able to take 1 of Goodwin/Lewis (or Smith).

If those guys can be had, you forego the PG (Frazier) every time.

I feel like it's proven year after year that guards dominate college ball. Yeah, a team with good bigs can be good but that's maybe one team? Just get good guards and a couple decent big men to board and play defense and an occasional bucket and you're set. This team we have next year could fit that mold.

Advanced analytics show pretty clearly that building your system around volume 3-point shooting and dribble penetration is the best way to generate efficient offense. Mid-range shots are terrible. Post touches are important, but mostly to collapse defense and create overloads on the perimeter. Some "purists" long for the days when big men played like big men, point guards controlled tempo and distributed, and wings could dominate by drilling 17-footer after 17-footer. That game is dead.

You can take the guard dominated Villanova team and I will take the Georgetown well balanced team and see who wins. Look up the Georgetown team with Ewing, Graham (PF), and Williams (WF) and see how these contemporary teams would fare against them.

I think the point that's trying to be made is that it would be much easier for Illinois to assemble a Villanova type of team then it would be to assemble a team such as your Georgetown example. The blue bloods of the world can, and do, assemble those sort of teams. It's exceedingly hard for a team at the level of ours to do it without gobs of luck being involved.

Yeah, how many Ewing-like players are there? How many of those would seriously consider, much less go, to Illinois? Even when we were damn good, we never got 5 star centers. Tilmon would be a major coup. But the only reason he's considering us is because he's from Illinois.

Groce has done a good job ID-ing kids who are players. I'm hopeful the '17 class will be excellent.

If we were so lucky to have both Goodwin and Lewis on board to be Illini there is no way in any layer of Hades that Groce chooses between them.

There is no need to get 3 bigs in next year's class. Two will be great. Heck, let's land one before we start worrying.

As others are pointing out, we're landing (DJW, Kipper, AJ, Javon) and targeting (Lewis, Goodwin - who plays big) longer and more athletic wings/small-ball 4s than what we have had recently which will help us rebound and defend the post better than what we have been doing.

I know they don't do press releases or anything, but is there a reason why Groce or the recruit wouldn't want the info public?

Come on Dan....hit your sources. I mean isn't that what we pay you for.....:D

Good question. I assume it has to do with not being able to talk about specific recruits until they've signed. Maybe they just leave it up to the player to tweet it our or something if they want.
