In that scenario, Lucas or Moore would be the red-shirt candidate. It's unlikely that both will be ready to play at a big ten level. Plus, I'm guessing Groce will set really high standards for his PG's. 2 things he values greatly are keeping care of the ball and playing defense, and freshman generally tend to be bad at both.

But I don't think we will get Moore and I don't think Groce will waste too much time on him. I'm guessing he met with Moore just to see if he was genuinely interested in coming here.
No way anyone from our 2016 recruiting class will redshirt, especially with 5 freshman coming in the following season.

That shouldn't be a factor. Groce has talked about redshirting coming down to 2 things. Is the player good enough to play at least 10 mpg? And is he expected to be a big contributor in the future (aka is it worth an extra scholarship year)?

We can debate if he actually commits here.:thumb:

But I think something we could all agree on is we would have a very deep team if we got Moore and Thorne, especially if Nunn ends up staying.

The only way Moore or Lucas red shirts is if Lucas has some problems with recovering from his injury. Neither one is going to take a non medical red shirt.

When your NBA future is on the line it's pretty hard to turn down an offer from Roy, Cal, or Self. I know there are a lot of lawyers on this board - I wonder how many of them turned down Harvard to stay close to home and attend their state school. Zero?

Yep, you leave Harvard with a law degree, you're basically sitting pretty good in landing a great gig. But not the same with the NBA. Going to UNC, UK or KU hasn't always been beneficial for a kid's NBA future. Sure some blue-blood McDs end up just fine, but there also some recent examples where stock's have severely dropped...

  • SG Wayne Selden KU - was in the same 2013 class as Wiggins and Embid. Was as high as #15 in Chad Ford's 2015 first mock draft, but now is ranked #68 and may go undrafted.
  • PF Cheick Deillo KU - was projected before this season to go #10 in Ford's first mock draft. But couldn't supplant other KU bigs and is now is slated for the end of the first round, if he stays in.
  • PF Carlton Bragg KU - was initially projected by Ford towards the end of the first round, but would have been projected as 2nd rd/undrafted if he had come out.
  • PF Cliff Alexander KU - don't need to rehash this, but clearly it didn't work out, even if he's now in the league. He went into KU projected top 5 in the 2015 draft to an undrafted free agent. Even before he was pulled by Self, he only averaged 18mpg and 7.1ppg.
  • C Dakari Johnson UK, Harrison Twins, UK - let's lump these guys all together because they were all RSCI top 10, but one went undrafted, while the other two went in the 2nd round. Johnson found himself backing up Julius Randle as opposed to being the man on a different team.
  • PF Alex Polythress UK - RSCI #8 in 2012, had to stay all four years, now ranked #79 on Ford's big board. Overshadowed by myriad of other top ten guys.
  • PG Isiah Briscoe UK - RSCI #11 in 2015, #26 in first mock draft, now #73 on the big board. Overshadowed by Murray and Ulis.
  • C Skal Labissiere UK - RSCI #2 in 2015, #2 in first mock draft. Now, end of first round if he stays in.
  • SG Justin Jackson UNC - RSCI #9 in 2014, was #17 in Ford's first 2015 mock draft. Now is #74 on his big board.
  • SF Theo Pinson UNC - RSCI #15 in 2014, finished his soph year averaging less than 5ppg.
  • PF Isiah Hicks UNC - RSCI #14 in 2013, finished his jr year averaging 18mpg and 9ppg.
Except for Bragg, every one of these kids was a top 20 player, but in several of these cases, they had to battle for playing time with guys equally as talented or more seasoned. Seems like a real cautionary tale for these kids and their camps to think about, as for every Julius Randle and Joel Embid, there could be a Dakari Johnson or a Cheick Deillo.

If I'm a Goodwin or Tillman, I'm sure I'd be coming into the situation feeling I'm good enough to start and star at these places, but I may not know who I'm really competing with until it's too late. Like the bigs coming into KU and UK this season, probably didn't think Deillo and Labissiere respectively could still be there. And then if I'm not one-and-done, I have to consider what other studs may be gunning for my position in the 2018 class.

It would be really cool to get Mr. Basketball to attend his state University and help lead us back to glory where we rightfully belong.

Come on down, Charlie!!!

Michael O'Brien ‏@michaelsobrien 1h1 hour ago This #Illini and Charlie Moore news sure puts a wrench in my troll status. Oh well.

lol, poor MOB.

I've said since there were first rumors of Pastner leaving, I would LOVE to see Charlie in O&B. We wouldn't have to worry about somebody taking charge on the court for four years.

Pontiff, Great post regarding players whose status dropped after going to KU, UK, and UNC Duke has had a ton of MCAA types transfer or go undrafted, possibly the most.

Landing Moore would be a huge coup. To go from having zero PGs for the last two seasons to two really good Freshman PGs for next season, I would think a lot of recruits in the 2017 class would be pretty excited to play for the Illini with two young quality PGs already on the squad.

Fingers crossed. This is a big deal. Please let this be a thing. I feel like we will be a tourney team next season with both Charlie and Tajon on our roster.

I'm fine with TJL as our PG next year, not sold on Moore as others. Concerned about his size and how his game translates to next level.

To be fair, KBD only moved into Illinois around his freshman year, and he was all OSU the whole way. Don't let anyone tel you any different.

False. I attended middle school/played bball with KBD at Chiddix Jr. High School in Normal, IL. He was in the 6th grade when I was a 7th grader. He was set on OSU as soon as they offered, Parham is a close family friend to his so it was a hard decision to turn him down.\\

Edit: irrelevant to current topic, but felt I needed to clarify since my 30 sec. of fame is playing with KBD through out middle school.

Turning down Parham hasn't seemed that hard for most recruits. ;)

I would be concerned about his volume of shooting without being a high shooting % type guy. Wasn't his 3pt % below 30 %? I don't recall.

Wish I didn't laugh at that! Definitely hope his recruiting efforts pay off for 2017! Charlie Moore would be an awesome get for this program this late in the process.

Who is the PF from Florida (6'9" ish?) that we are looking into (or should be) that is currently going to a Prep School somewhere? I cannot think of his name. Perhaps has a Miir (or something like that) in his last name???

Who am I thinking of?

Answered my own question. I think it is Mayan Kiir from Victory Rock Prep. 6'9"/200 .

What are the current thoughts of this guy? Video I seen (can't find now) seemed pretty good. I can find this one, though: https://youtu.be/eoue-6MnxVU

People said the same things about Boatright. They're roughly the same size and have a similar game -- attackers and high intensity/motors. Admittedly I saw Boat a ton more times live than CM, but from watching Moore a lot on The Cube, I'd say they have a lot in common. I think Moore will do very well at the next level and I hope it's with us.

Moore looks clearly better than TJL based on the very incomplete information I've seen. But the offer lists seem to agree.

Other posters seem to agree, but I'm not sold. Moore is quicker, and a better scorer/shooter but not always the most efficient. He can be a chucker at times. Kind of gives me some Ahmad Starks chills. In terms of court vision, passing and being a floor general, I'd give an edge to Lucas. Defensively it's not close. Lucas is a ball-hawk defender and Moore has his work cut out for him there. I'd say overall TJL has the higher ceiling.

I'm sure it's already being brought up tastefully on visits with Tilmon, but man this point needs to be hammered into the heads of recruits. Great post.
