Anyone know the real reason behind Burnett transferring? Always concerning to me when a freshman jumps ship from a good program and whether its truly an issue with the coach or the player thinking he is better than he is at that moment. Will he be able to handle the tough love from BU that he will for sure be getting if he comes here?

he committed before TT got multiple transfers at the same position. most McDonald's All Americans don't appreciate getting recruited over.

I'm quite comfortable that Underwood will get Curbelo, Miller & Burnett ample minutes. We need another top line CG and Burnett fits the bill extremely well. Fingers crossed. No worries about Underwood's tough love approach.

Yeah but this is my point. Will be appreciate getting yelled at by BU in a timeout? Will he appreciate getting sent to the bench for making a mistake. My feeling is that Burnett didn’t even give it a chance, he was halfway through his freshman year. Just playing devils advocate here..

This board sure is entertaining. Brian Cook played in the NBA for almost a decade. Mike Davis averaged 11 and 8 as a sophomore. Let's slow down.
Cook did but you can see the similarities between Cook and Cole. I bet you will see it more next year when he grows into the 4 spot for 25-30 minutes a game and average 11-8 or 12-7 a game. He will be a stud next year and given time this year, make huge plays to get us wins.

I always start responding in detail to this message, then backspace it all. What's the point with this argument anymore - even if you don't truly believe it?

Illinois as a team is 39.7% from behind the arc. That’s the best in the big ten. Iowa is in 2nd with 39.5%. Wisconsin in 3rd with 39.0% and Michigan around 37.5% (don’t have Michigan’s exact number handy).

With Williams, Miller, Trent, Ayo, and Grandison, I don’t know that the missing piece is another shooter. I would much rather have another guy that can drive and FINISH at the rim since with Feliz being gone, it seems that we’re left with just Ayo in that role now.
Monte is a open look shooter at best. He cannot shoot the three with a guy in face very well. He has his high percentage because of smart open looks. He does not take a lot but the ones he takes are high percentage. You notice that the players in the conference are not goin g to give him that open look like he did against lesser teams. Not criticizing him, just pointing out that he is. Not a 3 point specialist like you see at Wisky or Iowa. Now Ayo is a ok shooter from the arc but its not his bread and butter. Frazier is the John Starks shooter, its hit or miss so yes, we could use a more pure shooter like Hutch which would make the lane much easier to drive in with a shooter like Hutch. Miller is our closest to a pure shooter and he is getting more comfortable which will help down the road this year

Because when a kid transfers from a solid program halfway through his freshmen year, that should raise some red flags IMO. This is not a situation where the kid had clearly been wronged or needed to get closer to home for personal reasons. If it is then I'd love to be corrected.

Yea he got recruited over a bit. Who doesn't at the high major level?

I have no issues with BU yelling at players when they mess up or not playing with purpose. Babying them does not get the point across. Izzo does the same thing, Fran goes nuts. I have seen Roy Williams, Bill Self and Ratface get in players face. It is BU’s style and it works

Using your “logic” though, we wouldn’t go after very many recruits other than grad transfers. Trust BU and staff to figure out if any “red flags” will be legit problems going forward. No guarantees it will work out here if he comes, but no guarantees about any new player coming. Just do the due diligence and make as informed decisions as possible.

Not necessarily. Plenty of good players transfer after spending a year or more at their original program. I'm all for bringing in top recruits via transfer but this one smells (same w/ OT from WVU)

I anticipate the Zoom meeting will be treated like a typical two-way interview. We want Burnett to get to know us and to convince him to think about transferring in. But we also probably want to get a feel for who he is and whether he would be a good fit for our program. At some point during the meeting, I would expect us to ask Burnett, "so what led you to decide to transfer?" His response should be quite telling in how we will evaluate him.

Other than both announcing during the season, I see no similarities between the two. And it is becoming much less uncommon for players to announce during the season. I know some will say, “he’s abandoning his teammates” and I get that but don’t necessarily agree with it. Kids put a lot of time into the sport during a season, and if they feel they aren’t getting a chance for all their effort then probably time to move on for the benefit of both team and player. Add in how tough this year has been with Covid and all the restrictions, well makes it even tougher to stay.

By the way, I wasn’t big on going after OT, but just don’t think the situations are that similar.

I don't see a red flag on the surface - the over-recruiting was not the next class (so a frosh during his soph year) but high major transfers in the same class. If I were him, that would raise trust issues - changed the whole development plan being sold and then executed (unless informed before signing that was the intent). Its not a promise of results (PT or success) but of opportunity. Imagine if Ayo or Miller barely played first year because of a couple of transfers - they wouldn't be very happy

I'm not sure he ever actually wanted to go to Texas Tech to be honest. It's a hot destination spot right now from prep schools but it seems like there's some strings attached there.

With Ayo gone in the draft and Hutch a big question mark playing time is there to be had. As long as Burnett knows he's going to have to earn it I'd be thrilled to get him.

Dude has a 6'10 wingspan so he provides some length at the 3 spot for us. He just has to be patient this time around.

Bit of a tangent but generally this bugs me about college recruiting. Generally, coaches feed these kids what they want to hear at the time and hope it works out that way. The message should be "come in and put in work and we will get you in the NBA" not "we will center the offense around you, get you 10 shots a game, 20 mins a game etc".

Of course, recruiting has changed and kids want to hear the latter.

Was he rated higher than Adam Miller? I guess being a burger boy put him ahead of Miller. Who won Mr. Basketball Adam. Mr Burnett the uniform is waiting for you.

We pretty much struck out in 2021 recruiting. You take Nimari if you can and don't think twice about it.

Nothing at all indicates there is any friction, nor has he, or the school caused any. All information points to lack of playing time after players transferred in playing the same position after he committed. I mean, after Ayo was recruited and if we brought in 2 guards transfers that he had to split time with as a freshman, you think Ayo would be at Illinois after year one?

He was High School teammates with Coleman Hawkins. I'm sure he will be fully aware of the coaching style he will receive should he choose to come to Champaign.
People get recruited over all the time, yes, but it's pretty rare when it happens before you even get to campus. One of the guys they brought in was supposed to have to redshirt this season, but because of COVID was eligible immediately. When you are a top 25 recruit, you sign up to play. The two guys they brought in had extensive in-game experience. With virtually no training camp, it really puts the true freshman at a disadvantage for earning time on the court.

Guys that get recruited over also often tend to transfer. Transfers are more and more common each year. This year is likely to be absolutely bananas with roster movement. I hardly think of it an an indictment on someone's character.

Maybe he just hates Texas?

Especially, since this year is a "free" transfer year. No waiting.

West Texas/Panhandle is just a different place to live. Cant lump Dallas/Austin/ San Antonio/Houston in with it. It's been over 30 years since I left Champaign for Dallas and there is no way I could live out where Tech is.
