Trent is obviously having the best year of all the freshman guards but let's not pencil him in next year's starting line up just yet. Mark Smith (and maybe even Demonte) still has a higher ceiling. He very likely will make the leap and be the player will all expect him to be.

Really, Trent is averaging 11.7 ppg & increasing, Dee finished his freshman year at 12, Deron at 6. He is more likely in the NBA than on our benchnext year (& don't take that as I think he will be in the NBA next year) If Mark Smith makes the leap then they both start.

I read somewhere that Ramey's parents won't let Mizzou anywhere near their son. I could be considered tantamount to child abuse to allow your son to be coached by Cuonzo, lol.:D

Not true and Ramey's father considers him and Martin as friends.

One thing that Ramey's father said is they are not going to be in any kind of hurry, it will be Spring before they announce anything.

He also said “It matters,” Terrell said. “You want him to go somewhere where he is the primary option, and everybody believes in him.”

Who would be the backup if he chose Illinois and would they be ok with that?

So in two years...we could very well roll out...

Ayo/Ramey
Frazier/Lucas
Smith/Jones
Liddell/Kipper
Okoro/Spicy G

Next year...

Ayo/Ramey
Frazier/Lucas
Smith/Jones
Kipper/Finke
Black/Spicy G

Do the Irvins need to be consulted before a potential Ayo/Ramey linkup to occur at UI? Asking somewhat facetiously and seriously at the same time.

Trent is going to be in the starting lineup. He is probably right now the best and most clutch player on the team and he is going nowhere but up.

Supposedly they're okay with it, Ayo wants to win.

I highly doubt BU would go this hard after Ramey if it would tick off the Dosunmus or Irvins.

BU wants Miller, Whitney, and others from MIF/MP in the future. He is not going to go and tick them off and ruin our chances with those guys over Courtney Ramey.

I think Smith and Williams both have a higher ceiling. They both simply have better frames than Trent. Trent is a slippery guy who plays with considerable confidence but you can already see teams starting to play him differently because he has predictable tendencies and heavily favors his left hand. That doesn't mean he won't grow and improve nor that he won't continue to be the best in that class but he simply doesn't have the same kind of physical advantages.

Time to start believing we have a legit shot. Visit looking likely. Unsure if UV or OV, but staff is trying their hardest to get him on campus.

BU is selling Ramey on starting next year with Trent and Ayo. I know it sounds like a lot of guards, but having 6 guards (Trent, Ayo, Ramey, Mark, Damonte, Tejon) wouldn't be too bad. Especially those 6.

Round out the class with a big guy and Tevian Jones and that is a big turn around. (1 transfer in that scenario)

Just looking at our 2018 official visit schedule, recruiting this year has already been a wild ride. Add that commit trifecta and we go Willy Wonka boat-ride level bonkers.

Is it okay for me to actually starting thinking we have a shot with Ramey? I'm conditioned pretty thoroughly otherwise...

BU said he told Trent that he was going to be the one with the opportunity at crunch time for trent's full career here.....don't believe Bu has said that about MS or DW....Trent has the highest ceiling on the squad ....period...

DW still recovering from his injury and MS has a very stiff playing frame...seems like he is always a step behind every one else....Both DW and MS will have good careers at UI, but TF is the Real deal and the most exciting player for the Illini in many years....will be 1st team B1G frosh team and maybe FOY...

just my humble opinion

I think it comes down to how you want to define "ceiling". Who had the better college career, Dee or Deron? Who had the better pro career? To state the obvious, Trent and Mark are not Dee and Deron. However I remember people (ok myself) ready to write Deron off his freshman year because he couldn't hit his free throws.

Also, just because somebody has a higher ceiling doesn't mean they will be the better player or put up better stats. Potential does not equal actual outcome.

I would be stunned if Trent Frazier is not starting next year.

The gap between Frazier and Smith/Williams is pretty enormous right now. And while we all assumed that Smith (and possibly Williams) had the higher upside, is there anything supporting that assumption?

I think Frazier can be the type of guy who averages ~18 points and 5 assists a game by the time he graduates.

I just hope that all of the players don't buy into the trash talk about who is better than who. I'm sure the coach would much prefer that they work toward "what can I do to make my teammates better". How many times have we seen players that read all the hype when they have a good game only to flop the next time out? Here is hoping that the ILLINI reach their potential>

Agree with the first sentence 100% and can't figure out why we constantly have to go back and forth on who is better than who. They're all Illini, what's it matter? Why they constant comparisons?

Ayo, Ramey, Frazier, Smith, Williams compare favorably in size to Dee, Deron, and Luther. The missing part is Augustine. He was critical to their success and his foul problems probably cost us a national championship. One of most valuable bigs in thirty years.

Please find us a clone.

You can think Trent will have the best career, but right now just from a body and athletic potential Smith still has the higher ceiling. He's behind right now because he hasn't played as much basketball as other guys the last few years. But if he gets it and turns into what people thought he could turn into his ceiling is really high.

Highly doubt Payton is at the top of our board. If we don't get Jones, then yes.

Ugh, forgot Payton is a '19er. Initial comment holds, but need to add Whitney to the top of our board. Thing is, there's plenty of time to evaluate him and cultivate a VG relationship.

Can see MS being a better offensive player than TF due to size and strength. Looks to have lost confidence at this point and seems the most comfortable with the ball in his hands. The downside appears to be his quickness but maybe I am just not seeing it.

Correct, Whitney is at the top, but Payton has improved so much and will continue to rise, high ceiling for sure. Athletic, great footwork, and a relentless worker on the court. I hope somehow, someway, he fits in for 2019.
